Throh
58/98 (Emerging Powers)
We finish the week with the Judo Pokémon,
Throh.
Like Sawk, it has decent
stats for an unevolving
Basic: 90 HP, Psychic Weakness are
fine. It has a slightly heavier Retreat cost of two,
which you are never going to pay for a Pokémon like
this.
Throh’s
only attack, Scarf Hold, actually refers to a move in
Judo (kesa
gatame), which is one of the
first holds you learn. I like the thought that went into
that . . . at least it’s better than giving it a generic
Headbutt/Chop/Scratch type
of attack. For [F][C], you
get a less than great 30 damage, but also a coin flip to
stop the Defending Pokémon from attacking next turn. I
guess it’s fairly obvious why this isn’t good in
Modified . . . even if you hit the flip, they can Evolve
or Retreat out of the lock, and 30 damage isn’t going to
do much for you anyway.
In Limited though, this is if anything even better than
Sawk. The low damage isn’t
such a drawback, the lock is harder to break, and the
solid HP keeps him around for a while. So, use him at
the Prerelease,
then tuck him safely in the
binder.
Rating
Modified: 1.5 (Low damage, very fragile lock . . . it
ain’t
gonna work)
Limited: 3.75 (very solid choice)
