Lampent (Plasma Storm)
Bit of a strange review today, as we bring you a look
at an evolving Stage 1. That’s ok though because the
Chandelure line is one of my favourite concepts from
Generation V (I know it’s a love-it-or-hate-it thing).
There’s also a chance that Chandelure itself may be
playable as there is one due in the next set with a
pretty neat Energy acceleration Ability.
This Lampent isn’t like Eelektrik NVI – and evolving
Stage 1 which you play for its own sake – it’s only
going to be used as a way of getting Chandelure into
play, and anything beyond it acting as a stand-in when
Rare Candy is not available is a bonus. So . . . where
do we find our bonus here?
Not in the low 70 HP, that’s for sure. Nor in the
Water Weakness and Fire Typing. The attack is very poor
too: two Energy for a vanilla 20 damage. The one
appealing thing about the card is the Ability,
Freefloating, which gives Lampent no retreat cost
(instead of the usual one) so long as it doesn’t have
any Energy attached. The effect is useful, I guess, and
there’s not much reason for attaching to Lampent anyway,
so it’s not hard to meet the conditions for Freefloating.
I just feel that they could have easily given the card
free retreat and had done with it. It’s effectively the
same thing is the vast majority of cases (unless
Garbodor DRX is around), just less awkward.
Eh, I’d still probably pick Lampent NVI over this one
for its cheap Catcher-style attack and extra HP, though
having a free retreater floating around in a format full
of Hypnotoxic Laser-induced Status effects, couldn’t
hurt.
Rating
Modified: 1.75 (I suppose it’s a little better than
the average of its kind)
Limited: 2 (the Ability is nice enough, but that’s
about it)
