Jellicent
(Plasma Storm)
Today’s Pokémon might seem like a harmless Mr Pringle
lookalike but, as usual, he comes with sinister flavour
text again referencing the huge number of ships he has
sunk (seriously, check out the previous ones, especially
the depressing NVI version). Can this underwater mass
murderer be as destructive in the TCG as he apparently
is in the Pokémon World?
Actually, this card is similar to
yesterday’s in that what we have is a useful
Ability, stuck on a less than useful card. The Ability
in question here is Spiteful Spirit, which
Confuses and Poisons your
opponent’s Pokémon if Jellicent
is active and is damaged by an attack. That’s a nice
thing to have if your Pokémon is somewhat tank-ish
and can survive, or if it has the firepower to put
something that might attack it in jeopardy.
Unfortunately, that’s where a 100 HP Stage 1 just
doesn’t cut it. Especially not when its attack, Aqua
Bullet, only does 40 damage plus 10 snipe to one of the
Bench for the cost of one water and one Colourless
Energy. Honestly, it seems like they were making these
cards for formats that haven’t existed in Pokémon for
many years . . . formats where 40 damage was a decent
return for your investment, and where 100 HP meant that
your Pokémon was likely hanging around for a couple of
turns unless your opponent specifically
teched against it.
Those days are long gone . . . a bit like
Jellicent’s chances of ever
seeing tournament play. If you want to Poison your
opponent’s Pokémon, just use
Hypnotoxic Laser and use Pokémon that can
actually do some decent damage.
Rating
Modified: 1.5 (again, nice Ability, shame about the
card)
Limited: 3 (useful here, where the low damage doesn’t
matter and Status conditions are much more effective)
