Serperior
(Legendary Treasures)
Today’s reprint is brought to you from the very first
Black and White set. Did we miss
Serperior while it was gone? To tell the truth,
we barely knew it existed.
That’s because it is Seperior’s
misfortune to be a healing-focused Pokémon during
formats where healing is either utterly redundant (due
to OHKOs) or needs to be spectacularly effective (Max
Potion, Gold Potion) in order to be worthwhile. Oh yeah,
and it’s a Stage 2 . . . the format hasn’t been very
kind to those recently either. It’s kind of a shame
really, as Serperior’s Royal
Heal Ability is quite good. 10
damage from all
of your Pokémon between
each turn
is more than decent. It’s stackable too, so in theory
you could be taking off 40 damage
off of everything.
Do the recent rule changes make things better for this
card? Well, at least Snivy
can’t be donked first turn,
and Serperiors can’t be
dragged out and KO’d thanks to the Catcher
nerf. The Leaf Tornado
attack isn’t
terrible either, with a nice Energy Trans effect,
just underpowered in the current environment.
It is possible to see a use for this card in preventing
2 hit KOs from something like a
Darkrai EX, but then with Dark Claw and
Hypnotoxic Laser available,
even that is a long way from being a sure thing. It
would likely be more economical (in terms of deck space)
to run Potion for that job anyway. Meanwhile, it’s still
as useless as ever if you find yourself staring down a
Black Kyurem EX,
Rayquaza EX,
Kyurem
PLF etc.
Maybe one day there will be a place for cards like this,
but that day is not today.
Rating
Modified: 2.5 (clunky and unreliable way of attempting
Prize denial)
Limited: 3.25 (healing is usually good here and cheapo
attacks are always good)
