Camerupt
(Boundaries Crossed)
In contrast to yesterday’s card,
Camerupt is a pretty goofy design (a camel with
mini volcanos on its back)
that can’t really boast many fans. Can it be made into a
decent card though? It would be nice to end the week on
a high note.
Camerupt
is a Stage 1, which isn’t great, however it does have a
very nice 130 HP. Weakness to Water is about as horrible
as it gets right now though (Keldeo
eats these for breakfast, lunch
and dinner),
and the retreat cost is either a joke or a way to get
you to buy more copies of Switch.
I don’t completely hate Fire Shard,
Camerupt’s first attack. It’s a bit slower than I
would like (one Fire , two
Colourless) and the base damage of 60 isn’t great, but
it does come with automatic Burn
and a flip
for Paralysis. Hit that coin flip and this attack could
cause some inconvenience (unless your opponent plays
Keldeo or Switch). At any
rate, it’s better than Flamethrower which needs
four Energy just to do 80 damage
plus you have to discard one.
Bleh.
I would always use Fire Shard over this.
But would I use it at all?
Ummm
. . . no. This card is a cut above the usual set
filler thanks to Fire Shard’s multiple Status Condition
potential, but it still doesn’t do nearly enough to be
able to trade blows with the kind of decks we see in
competitive play. Oh, and did I mention
Blastoise/Keldeo?
Rating
Modified: 1.75 (superior set filler)
Limited: 3 (nice HP and decent attacks, but a little too
slow)
