Golurk
(Plasma Blast)
It’s Halloween today, which is a
much bigger
deal for Americans than it is for us in the UK, but I’m
happy to enter into the spirit of things (sorry) and
review a Ghost Pokémon. Of course the important question
is: will Golurk be
frightening anyone who sees their opponent play it down
in a game?
Well, he’s got pretty good 130 HP for a Stage 1, but
also a really bad Dark Weakness (Darkrai
EX is very
much a thing) and a stupidly huge retreat cost. The
attacks leave something be desired as well. Iron Fist of
Justice (there are some seriously ridiculous attack
names in this set) offers good value (you do 60 damage
for a Double Colourless) and comes with an irrelevant
drawback – the attack does nothing if you have Plasma
Pokémon in play. Seeing as there are no obvious combos
with any Plasma
Pokemon,
or a place for Golurk in
existing Plasma decks, you are probably safe to ignore
that bit.
Iron Fist would be fine as a quick attack to use if
Golurk could back it up with
something better, but it can’t. Shadow Punch may not be
affected by Resistance, but even so the damage output of
just 80 for a massive four Energy is just terrible. To
put it into context, whatever attacks
Golurk uses it would take
three turns to get an unaided KO on most EX Pokémon, and
that is just nowhere near good enough.
Sorry guys, this Pokémon is about as scary as a
Buneary that needs a cuddle.
Rating
Modified: 1.75 (no candy for you)
Limited: 3.75 (good HP and a cheap attack – it can have
some candy here)
