Porygon-Z
(Plasma Blast)
We end the week with a look at
Porygon-Z, the virtual Pokémon. Apparently it
evolves using a ‘Dubious Disc’ . . . not sure I would
want anything ‘dubious’ anywhere near my computer.
Anyhoo,
this Porygon-Z is the latest
in a long line of Stage 2 Pokémon that have a variation
on the Energy Trans Power, first seen way back in Base
set on Venusaur. What they
all have in common is that they allow you to move a
certain Type of Energy around your Pokémon as often as
you like during your turn. This is a nice thing to be
able to do, allowing you to conserve Energy in play and
redistribute it to different attackers, giving you both
board presence of flexibility. In the current format, it
also allows for complete cost-free healing of a Pokémon
with Max Potion, and this is pretty much the basis of
the Klinklang BLW and
Darkrai/Hydreigon
DRX decks that we have seen recently.
Porygon-Z
does exactly this, but he (it?) does it with just Plasma
Energy. This means that the uses for this Pokémon are
somewhat limited and specialised. It hardly seems worth
setting up a Stage 2 to save a few
Plasma Energy from being discarded in a
Kyurem/Deoxys
deck, or a Genesect list.
After all, those decks tend to use them for a quick
burst of acceleration with Colress
Machine and need Type specific Energy to pay for their
attack costs. Where it could be used is with either
Plasma Tornadus EX or the
Dialga EX we looked at
earlier in the week. Both of these Pokémon benefit from
keeping Plasma Energy in play –
Tornadus to power up its attack and
Dialga to mill cards from
the opponent’s deck.
Of the two, Tornadus is much
the more viable strategy: not exactly top tier, but can
be scary to face.
Dialga?
As I said earlier in the week – fun
deck only.

Modified: 3 (good at what it does, but incredibly niche)
Limnited:
2 (not really worth setting up a Stage 2 for)
