Malamar
#77 (XY)
The laws of the Pokémon TCG decree that whenever you get
two cards featuring the same Pokémon in a set, one is
always much better than the other . . . so you can guess
where this is heading.
This Malamar is also a frail
Stage 1, but doesn’t offer anything interesting or new.
Instead we get a weak (though cheap) attack in Mental
Panic which does 30 damage
and forces your opponent to flip a coin next turn to see
if they can attack with the Defending Pokémon. Of
course, they always have the option to just retreat to
the Bench to remove the effect, making this a
very soft
lock indeed, and one which is likely to cause minor
inconvenience at best. Puncture isn’t much good either.
Three Energy for Resistance-ignoring 70 damage is very
poor value in the current environment and not likely to
persuade anyone to use this card.
If you like Malamar, go have
some fun with #76 and leave this one in the binder where
he belongs.
