Fairy Garden

This beautifully illustrated Stadium card does something that we have seen Stadiums do a few times in the past: modify retreat costs. Moonlight Stadium was a pretty popular card in Dark and Psychic decks back in the day, while Skyarrow Bridge has seen plenty of play in Basics decks since its release.

Paying Retreat costs is usually something you will want to avoid (although decks which can accelerate Energy from the discard sometimes like to do it), as keeping Energy on the board is often the key to maintaining an effective offence. Fairy Garden gives free retreat to any Pokémon that has a Fairy Energy attached and so can be used, not just for Fairies, but for any deck that plays Rainbow and/or Prism Energy.

The thing is though, I don’t see it as being used all that much. Partly this is because we have other ways of avoiding paying to retreat (Float Stone, Switch, Escape Rope), but mainly because we have other Stadiums that are more useful. Virbank City Gym is the Stadium of choice for fast, aggressive decks because it ramps up the damage done by Hypnotoxic Laser, while slower set up decks prefer to use Tropical Beach for the consistency-boosting draw power.

Fairy Garden is a solid card which will see some play, particularly when (not if) pure Fairy decks become more powerful. For now though, there are probably other things you would rather use.

Rating

Modified: 3.25 (these cards always get some play)

Limited: 3.75 (if you pull enough Fairies, it’s a very worthwhile card)

Fairy Garden.
Unlimited 150 review.
Free retreat, it’s a powerful effect. Fluffy Berry was once a staple Tool even with its restriction on exs and then Float Stone took over as the #1 card for rescuing stranded Claydol!
Fairy Garden has the potential to give free retreat to a whole deck if built well, the main problem being… there’s just not that many Fairy Pokémon available yet. In previous reviews I’ve looked at the idea of a Fairy deck made with the currently available cards, using some Colorless Wigglytuff to fill it out a little. Even a half Fairy deck will want to use this card though, free retreat with the mere attachment of a Multi Energy for example, it’s just too good to pass up. Especially when combined with Aromatisse to move Fairy Energy onto whoever needs retreating and back off again, Fairy decks are just waiting for their time to come.

Rating: 2.5 (A very powerful effect, it’s just waiting for a few more Fairy Pokémon to become amazing!)
