Shuckle
(Legendary Treasures)
Whatever you think about Legendary Treasure being mostly
made up of reprints and not very playable new cards,
it’s hard to deny that it contains some of the most
adorable artwork the game has ever seen. Cards that
depict multiple Pokémon have always been pretty rare and
this set is full of some great ones: take this
Shuckle for instance, which
seems to feature them sharing their berry juice with a
happy Emolga.
Cutemon overload, for sure.
Does the card itself live up to the picture?
Of course not.
Shuckle is an
unevolving Basic with 80 HP
and two attacks of questionable usefulness. The first,
Share, heals 40 damage from a
Benched Pokémon. Not horrible for the price of a
single Grass Energy, but not especially valuable either.
I can think of ways to heal damage that don’t involve
using up attacks or giving away easy Prizes (Potion, Max
Potion, Pokémon Centre). The
offensive attack, Double Stab, is just a bit of nonsense
filler really, as no-one is going to put three Energy on
a Shuckle so they can have
two ‘tails fails’ coinflips
for 40 damage each.
The artwork makes you want to play
Shuckle, but everything else about the card yells
‘don’t even think about it!’
Rating
Modified: 1.5 (would be nice to have a card that was
both cute and
playable)
Limited: 2.5 (Share is mildly useful in this format)

Intro to
Unlimited 150 |
Shuckle
Modified:
Well, not much to say about
this little guy. Double Stab is a generic coin flip
damage attack so I suppose the main attraction is Share.
If you need to heal your Pokemon though, you're much
better off using a Trainer card like Potion rather than
using up an Energy and an attack and most likely, a
prize.
On the plus side, it has
really cute art and finally shows us Shuckle sharing the
juice it makes in its shell, something we've been told
about in Pokedex entries for years but never depicted on
a card.
Unlimited 150:
Same as Modified but
amplified here, so many better options for Basic Grass
Pokemon and healing effects. Shuckle really needs an
impenetrable brick wall of a card at some point to
better represent its in-game counterpart.
