Mismagius
(Legendary Treasures)
It’s a fact of life with Trading Card Games that some
cards must be unplayable filler. There are three reasons
for this:
1. Without ‘bad’ cards, you can’t have ‘good’ ones.
2. Even if all cards were good in isolation, some would
be better than others and so bad cards would be created
by default.
3. Hundreds of new cards are released each year. Making
them all balanced and playable is next to impossible.
Why do I mention this? Because it’s
the only way of explaining the existence of a card like
Mismagius and giving it some
kind of purpose.
Let’s face it,
Mismagius is a low HP Stage
1 with attacks that aren’t usuable
or even interesting. Absorb Life does 30 for two Energy
and heals an almost irrelevant 10 damage from itself;
while Spooky Shot is an underpowered, effect-free,
70-for-three Energy attack that has virtually no meaning
in today’s format. Oh and Mismagius
is Weak to Darkrai . . . as
if you needed another reason never to let this card
within a country mile of a competitive deck.
It’s not even suitable for fun/league play, as there is
nothing particularly ‘fun’ about it: there are no real
combos for this card, or any effects you can work with.
Even in limited, you would have to pull a really poor
selection of Pokémon to end up with this in your 40 card
deck. The artwork is nice, I guess, and that’s the most
you can really say about it.
We get these cards in Pokémon. We don’t like it much
when we do, but we should be used to it by now.
Rating
Modified: 1.25 (nothing going for it)
Limited: 1.5 (the set has great pull rates so you should
never need to use this)
