Shauna (XY)
The release of a new draw Supporter is always an excuse
for me to have a little mini-rant about how our
over-reliance on them brings too much variance into the
game, and how they’re all a bit mediocre anyway (apart
from Juniper). But even I have to admit that a new,
playable
draw Supporter is a very welcome thing indeed, and
that’s what we get with Shauna.
The effect is pretty straightforward – shuffle your hand
into your deck and draw five – and very reminiscent of
Professor Oak’s New Theory – which became a staple card
during the HeartGold
SoulSilver era of the game.
Not sure why the card designers felt the need to reduce
the draw by one card though: PONT was in no way
overpowered, it was just a
solid draw card.
So, where does Shauna fit in amongst out Supporter
selection? Juniper still pretty much rules the roost,
but Shauna is good enough to replace or run alongside
pretty much anything else. I suspect most players will
prefer N because of the disruption element, but at least
you can use Shauna when you have a big Prize lead. She’s
usually better in the early game than
Colress, but doesn’t have
the same huge potential later on. Shauna is definitely
superior to Bianca and Cheren.
I would probably classify Shauna as a ‘safe’ option for
most decks: something that can be used to round out your
draw Supporter count, especially in decks that don’t run
a large Bench to fuel Colress.
I expect that she’ll see a moderate amount of play,
which is about what she deserves.
Rating
Modified: 3.5 (a nerfed PONT
is better than no PONT at all)
Limited: 5 (draw in this format is something you
treasure)
