Yep, our last Pokemon of the week
is Sudowoodo. You might be surprised to hear this almost
made it onto the Top 10 list - and you can blame me for
that, cause I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who put it
on there!
So Sudowoodo...what does it do-o?
Well, all he does is Watch and Learn...like a tree. At 2
Energy, all this attack does is copy the opponent's last
move. If they attacked with their Pokemon in the last
turn, Sudowoodo can just use that attack as its own.
That's...pretty much it.
So why the high rating? Well,
perhaps it's my own thoughts on the matter, but here me
out on this one. I once rated a card called M Gengar-EX,
who had a very similar attack with a similar effect -
Phantom Gate. Course, that attack could pick any
Pokemon's attack and use it, whereas Sudowoodo is just
limited to one move, and that's whatever your opponent
used. And it might not even be that useful depending on
what they did! But there are a few other things to
consider.
For starters, considering what this
attack can do, it's relatively cheap. Sure, it could
copy something like Seismitoad-EX's Quaking Punch or
Regice's Resistance Blizzard, but it could also copy M
Rayquaza-EX's Emerald Break and end up doing little
cause you have only a few Benched Pokemon - or something
like Emboar-EX's attack where he needs to discard
Energy, thus setting him back. But hey, he can still do
major damage!
On that note, let's talk about
damage - specifically, Fighting damage. One thing that
you might not have considered with Sudowoodo is the
ability to stack on more damage thanks to his
Fighting-type! This could include Fighting Stadium,
Strong Energy, Muscle Band - a lot of different things,
and it all adds up after a while! Now combine that with
whatever your opponent used on their last turn - and now
you're doing upwards of 20, 40, maybe 60 damage more
than what they could do! And from Sudowoodo!
Of course, that requires a lot of
investment in a very gimmicky Pokemon, but if Sudowoodo
ends up in a Fighting deck where he can revenge kill
something with an absurd attack for almost
nothing...well, I'd say that's enough to see some play,
wouldn't you?
Rating
Standard: 2/5 (nah, but really,
Sudowoodo's a big gimmick Pokemon all-in-all - if
anything, you use him for that element of surprise)
Expanded: 2.5/5 (I mean, come on -
wouldn't it be crazy to KO something of your opponent's
with a 90 HP Basic non-EX? using their own attack?)
Limited: 3/5 (it's the shenanigans
that make me think he might see some play)
Arora Notealus: I also might just
have a soft spot for that crazy fake tree I saw dancing
a jig back in Johto so many years ago...
Weekend Thought: You excited for
Fates Collide? I think I just saw a few packs in a
GameStop the other day. Pretty crazy, huh? It feels like
forever since they've sold cards, and now here they are
again! It's like they picked that up from EBGames or
something...wait a minute...
