So now we come to...awwww, but I
actually LIKE Hydreigon!
It's a shame his BREAK Evo isn't
that great though. Let's start with his attack, Calamity
Blast. It's a 4-for-150 strike that discards 3 Energy
off of Hydreigon BREAK, but it also tosses out 50 damage
onto two of your opponent's Pokemon. Aside from the
discard cost, it's a really good attack, dishing out 250
damage in a single move. It's very effective at dealing
damage, but the high cost of the attack combined with
the discard just doesn't make him seem worth it, even
with 190 HP.
So let's say you wanted to run
Hydreigon BREAK - cause you're only gonna run 1 copy
period. What's the best option? Well in Standard, your
only option is Hydreigon (STS), who brings in Cruel
Fang, a 2-for-40 hit that reduces damage from the
Defending Pokemon by 40, and Dark Burn, another one of
those "discard X Type Energy from any Pokemon you've got
and deal damage based on X" kind of attacks, in this
case dealing 50 per Dark Energy. At the very least, this
supplements the massive discard cost of Calamity Blast,
but it doesn't really offer a quick means of getting
Energy back onto Hydreigon to power up into the attack
again. Really it's just good that the attacks add up
just right.
In Expanded though, it's another
story. The best option is to go with Hydreigon (PHF), as
he's got the Dark Impulse Ability to grab Dark Energy
from your discard pile and attach it to your Active
Pokemon - which can then mitigate the cost of Calamity
Blast to some degree. The earliest Hydreigon from Noble
Victories won't do, as Dark Aura prevents any of the
Energy from being Psychic, which Hydreigon BREAK needs,
and neither the Plasma Freeze version nor the Dragons
Exalted (98) version offer ways to break even with
Calamity Blast. That leaves Hydreigon (DEX-97) as the
only other option, since he's got the Dark Trance
Ability. With it, you can move around Dark Energy
freely, which combined with the overall Dark support in
Expanded can lead to a quick recovery on Calamity Blast.
At the end of the day, it's hard to
justify running Hydreigon BREAK though. Most Hydreigon
outside of maybe Hydreigon (DEX-97) don't see a lot of
competitively play, and Hydreigon BREAK does demand a
lot just to be in play. Calamity Blast is a hard attack
to pass up though, so perhaps it's good to take a look
at some builds that can incorporate the best of the
best.
Or you could just build some other
deck...I guess.
Rating
Standard: 1.5/5 (truth be told, he
needs a lot of support to function)
Expanded: 2.5/5 (and even with the
support, there are better options out there)
Limited: 2/5 (but at least he's got
a powerful attack to try and make up for it in some
small part)
Arora Notealus: WHY, HYDREIGON?!
You're such a great concept for a Pokemon, and you're
just so cool! You could've been a dragon tank at one
point! Why couldn't they just give you an EX version
instead of a BREAK?!
...wait, they did?...and it was
okay?...AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
