So really fast, my thoughts on Chesnaught BREAK from yesterday are pretty simple: he's an okay compliment to the Chesnaught that came in BREAKThrough, but he's extremely costly considering he's an effective "Stage 3", and while Forest of Giant Plants alleviates that, his Tough Hammer attack doesn't necessarily compliment what Chesnaught had before in his kit outside of the snipe, which could've been done without the recoil damage for the same cost.

Beheeyem BREAK is similar in this regard, but he doesn't have the benefits of Forest of Giant Plants. To be fair though, Beheeyem BREAK wasn't designed specifically with the Beheeyem from BREAKThrough in mind - because he's actually a promo card instead. In fact, looking through the...surprisingly short list of Beheeyem cards since its debut in Noble Victories, I'm not sure that Beheeyem BREAK compliments any of them aside from giving them an extra HP boost...and a really weird attack.

Cosmic Circle is a 3-for-100 hit - that's 3 Psychic Energy, by the way, so no DCE to use here - and it forces you to move around as many Psychic Energies as possible to your OTHER Pokemon in whatever way you'd like. Now if you had played down some alternate attacker of sorts that turn and hadn't even begun to power him up, this could be a decent way of fueling it with Energy that's already on the field. Or better yet, for getting the 3 Energy you decided would be a good idea to put on Beheeyem BREAK off of it so that you don't have to worry about losing all that investment in an instant.

Here's the thing: Beheeyem BREAK is bad. And no Beheeyem surrounding it is good either. The only one in Standard has a sniping move in Mind Bullet that's all about dealing damage based on the Energy they have - that's already much better at 1 Energy, even if it probably won't deal more than 60-80 damage at a time. And even then, it won't get run because there are better sniping moves that deal damage to Active and Benched Pokemon without being reliant on some other factor. And don't get me started on the Expanded list of Beheeyem, they don't need Beheeyem BREAK any more than the Standard one does.

And last I checked, Beheeyem didn't see play.

Rating

Standard: 1/5 (really, I can't think of giving this guy a good score...at all)

Expanded: 1/5 (at least with Chesnaught BREAK he would've gotten a 2/5 or something)

Limited: N/A (but no, I can't even give Beheeyem BREAK a good score!)

Arora Notealus: Beheeyem's an interesting Pokemon for sure, but there is nothing really redeemable to find in Beheeyem BREAK that would justify running it. Yes, that does include the 40 HP buff that BREAK Evos deliver normally, so no, don't run Beheeyem BREAK. Collect him if you want, he's got some nice art.

...I guess that's one positive then.

Next Time: Let's evolve into another BREAK!!

21times

Beheeyem Break (XY135), a promo card released January 4, 2016, has 130 HP and one attack.  Cosmic Circle, for three Psychic energy, does 100 damage and allows you to move your Psychic energy around however you would like.  I decided not to focus on Cosmic Circle though and built a deck around Beheeyem’s (Breakthrough, 74/162) Mind Bullet attack, which for a single Psychic energy does 20 damage to any one of your opponent’s Pokemon that has any energy attached to it.  I paired this with Decidueye GX (Sun & Moon, 12/149), hoping to take advantage of the Feather Arrow ability to augment damage on attacking Pokemon.

In theoreymon, this sounded like a great idea.  In reality, yeah, not so much.  I went 0-5 in five matches and frequently struggled to get a lot of damage on opponents.  I will again say that, like some previous decks that have failed spectacularly, I faced strong competition in all the matches I played, but that does give a good indication that this card cannot compete with the best decks in the format.

Rating

Standard: 1.5 out of 5

Conclusion

Beheeyem Break simply doesn’t compare to many of the other Break cards released by Pokemon.  For what is essentially a Stage 2 Pokemon, it doesn’t have a whole lot of HP and its attack is overshadowed by an attack from its Stage 1 incarnation.

Otaku

Time for our next neglected BREAK Evolution, Beheeyem BREAK (XY: Black Star Promos XY135).  As a Psychic Type, it enjoys some nice Type support, but mostly in Expanded; that’s where you’ll find the likes of Dimension Valley and Mystery Energy.  Psychic Weakness is found on most actual Psychic Types and many Fighting Types, while Psychic Resistance is found on nearly all Darkness and Metal Type Pokémon.  The Type has some serious standouts like Mew-EX that don’t need to be used on-Type but certainly gain benefits when they are, to those that require they be the focus of a deck like Trevenant BREAK.  I can’t recall any expressly anti-Psychic cards, but it is possible I missed them (especially among more recent releases).  All in all, not a bad Type to be, but not a huge advantage.  As the BREAK Evolution of a Stage 1, Beheeyem BREAK is like a Stage 2 without the perks: for better or worse, only effects that specify BREAK Evolutions or apply to all Evolution cards affect Beheeyem BREAK.  It sports 130 HP, a move that isn’t super easy to OHKO but is hardly super difficult, either.  The only other thing Beheeyem BREAK brings to the table is the attack “Cosmic Circle”; the rest will be supplied by the underlying Beheeyem.  Cosmic Circle costs [PPP] and does 100 damage, plus it allows you to move your [P] Energy around on your Pokémon.  This includes moving the Energy required to attack off of Beheeyem BREAK and onto your other Pokémon in play.

Beheeyem BREAK has to Evolve from Beheeyem, which in turn Evolves from Elgyem.  There are seven Elgyem from which to pick, all Basic, Psychic Type Pokémon with Psychic Weakness, no Resistance, Retreat Cost [C], and no Ancient Trait.  There are only three worth going into a little detail.  BW: Noble Victories 55/101 has the attack “First Contact”, allowing you to search your deck for up to two Pokémon and put them on your Bench, at a cost of [C].  BW: Black Star Promos BW55 has the Ability “Weak Barrier” that removes its Weakness if it has any [P] Energy attached.  Finally XY: BREAKthrough 73/162 is Standard legal (the only reason to bring it up).  Beheeyem options are unfortunately similar; only four options, but all are Stage 1 Psychic Pokémon with 80 or 90 HP, Psychic Weakness, no Resistance, Retreat Cost [C], and two attacks.  BW: Plasma Storm 70/135 is a Team Plasma Pokémon, and that is about the only excitement we have across the board, and it doesn’t actually make it better, just notable.  XY: BREAKthrough 74/162 gets a nod simply for being Standard legal, but it isn’t worth using either.  For Beheeyem BREAK to prove worthwhile, we’d need a very good Beheeyem to be released, preferably alongside a competent Elgyem; this would mirror what makes Trevenant BREAK useful, save that Trevenant BREAK has 30 more HP, a very good attack, and can take advantage of Dimension Valley (originally while all was still Standard legal).

Conclusion

I… wanted a Pojo CotD for every BREAK Evolution and hoped there was something we had missed with this card.  Don’t play this in Standard.  Don’t play this in Expanded.  You can’t play this in Limited (I know of no rules set that would allow promos, but I may be mistaken).  The main reason this card didn’t score the minimum one-out-of-five is because there still is a hypothetical use for this card and I want to avoid handing out the minimal score unless a card really has nothing going for it.
