All right...boys and girls...it's time for "RETURN OF
THE REVENGE OF THE SON OF THE 162-CARD DECK!!!" If you
don't understand why I'm dragging this hideous piece
of offal out again (and trying to actually fix it this
time) read this week's Letters column. For now, let's
get on with the fix...

1) First, we need to cut it down to at most 2 colors
and 2 major families. Actually, I've heard it said
that grass is an excellent color for beginners because
it's relatively simple to play. And I think with this
guy, we want to keep things simple <grin> so let's
settle on mono-grass. Two good families...hmm...I've
got it: Venusaur and Exeggutor. They are each good in
their own right and combo well together. Let's have
4-3-2 and 3-2. Now a couple of Scythers (a must with
mono-grass) and a bit of defense against fire, for
which Kangaskhan or Koffing would be nice. We could
also go with an "Overgrowth" theme (Gyarados, plus
Beedrill or something) but since we've had a nice
detailed look at the horrors of running too many
colors, let's spend some time at the opposite extreme.

2) For trainers, let's start by plugging in the
essentials: 3 Bill, 2 Oak, 2 Computer Search, and 4
Energy Removal. Now...a few Switches would be good
because of all these huge retreat costs. Some Gusts
are always nice, as is an Item Finder. And Pokemon
Center goes well with Venusaur. We'll add another Bill
if we have room.

3) Energy. Well, it's a mono deck. With both Scy and
Exeggutor in the same deck, we definitely want 4 DCEs.
Then we'll fill the remaining space with grass.

18 Pokemon:

4 Bulbasaur
3 Ivysaur
2 Venusaur
3 Exeggcute
2 Exeggutor
2 Scyther
2 Kangaskhan

20 Trainers:

4 Bill
2 Oak
2 Computer Search
4 Energy Removal
3 Switch
2 GOW
1 Item Finder
2 Pokemon Center

22 Energy:

18 Grass Energy
4 DCE

I chose to drop the colored energy to 18 because of
Venusaur. Still very weak to fire, but that's gonna be
a problem no matter what you do. And besides, I don't
really care about this particular deck--I'm just
fixing it to prove a point. I could have said "Go out
and buy Zap" and it would have been an enormous
improvement. If you're wondering what this is all
about, you probably haven't read this week's Letters
yet--go and do that now.
