Well
its another Saturday and another tourney at Déjà Vu Games…this week it
started a bit late, but that’s alright.
There were some new faces and some old faces totaling in a good
turnout of 14. That’s a
pretty good turnout around here; well once again I have stuck to my Hot
Jalapeno Potpourri…A few changes this week nothing big really, added a
Gastly to fight of Mimes and Hitmonchan’s better.
Took out the two Mr. Fugi’s since no one was using a stall deck
there. So this is what the
deck now looks like with those few changes…
Hot Jalapeno Potpourri
Energy: 22
7 Fire
6 Lighting
6 Psychic
4 Double Colorless
Pokemon: 13
3 Fossil Magmar
3 Electabuzz
3 Mr. Mime
3 Scyther
1 Ditto
1 Gastly
Trainers: 25
4 Bill
3 Professor Oak
3 Gust of Wind
3 Super Energy Removal
2 Energy Removal
2 Plus Power
2 Item Finder
2 Scoop Up
1 Energy Retrieval
1 Computer Search
Well
that’s how the latest version of Jalapeno is looking like and now onto
the tournament…this week was a lot tougher then most.
Many people were using top of the line decks.
Round 1-VS Dan C. with Water/Fire
I get a good start with Electabuzz and Scyther, while he
stands alone with a Krabby and Articuno.
Electabuzz makes quick work of Krabby in two turns, only to be
encountered by another, I S.E.R. the Articuno he is trying to build and
kill his 2nd Krabby. He
brings out Articuno and lays down another, he is able to get a few more
basics and bring down my Electabuzz.
I now promote my ditto with 3 Energies and Freeze Dry his Bird.
After that all he has is Articuno’s, I Blizzard my way to a good
win.

Round 2-VS Mike S. with Potpourri
Same Mike from last week that beat me, I’m pretty hungry
for revenge here and this time I get it.
I start with a Scyther against his Hitmonchan, looks good so
far…I get some bench support from Magmar and quickly power up everyone
and kill of his Hitmonchan out comes a Mr. Mime that’s all he has so it
looks pretty easy for me. I
retreat and send out Magmar and continue my rampage.
He evens things out with a few removals and Hitmonchan return with
4 successive Jabs that Smokescreen failed to yield.
I now am finally able to find some energy to feed to my Buzz’s.
Finish off his Chan and he sends another after me.
He Jabs it and I return the favor and Thunderpunch it for 30, he
Jabs Buzz and finishes him off. I
now send my Scyther after it and Slash Hitmonchan.
He retreats and sends out Mime and meditates.
My deck is now running pretty low, but I need some desperately
needed speed. I use my Bill
and get to Gust’s! I Gust
out a Scyther that has 40 and kill it, next turn I Gust out the Hitmonchan
and slash him. I’m at 1
Prize and he is at 3, but my deck is pretty low and a Chansey on his bench
has an 80 on from a Double edge he did earlier.
If I can Gust it out and finish it with Mr. Mime’s Meditate, I
can win the game. I have 4
left in my deck and I have used 2 Gusts and 2 Item Finders, which means I
have one more either in my deck or prizes.
So if I Oak I may risk the chance of Gust in my prize pile of 1 and
deck myself. During this
thinking phase, time is up and I win.
I look at my deck and sure enough the Gust is their J

Round 3-VS Alex K. with Raindance
Alex still wants to give his Raindance another try, but I
being a good player would go against this action completely.
But it doesn’t matter he is a good player and can get around the
Mr. Mime metagame, sometimes. He
starts with an Articuno and me an Electabuzz.
He is able to get the Squirtle then a Wartortle down but a G.O.W.,
Pluspower and Thunderpunch ended his 3rd turn Blastoise in a
hurry. The game goes on and
he is able to score a few prizes with his Articuno’s and the Same with
me and my Gust of Wind’s on his Squirtles.
We are tied at 3-3 prizes now and it looks like I’m going to get
the next 3 in a breeze. With
his deck down pretty low and a very small chance of getting his Blastoise
out. I continued my beat down
with Scyther now. I’m also
Pumping my Ditto up, mobilizing him for a fight against Blastoise or
another Articuno. He manages
to get his Blastoise out, but energy is low for him now.
I fight with my Scyther till death and send out Ditto…Ditto goes
crazy and wipes out a Articuno with a Freeze Dry, then a Blastoise with
two Hydro Pumps. He tried to
Bubble stall me but he couldn’t Paralyze and I had Gust to get out the
Blastoise and kill it. I
picked up my 6th prize of Blastoise for the win.

Round 4-VS John H. with Psychic/Lighting Haymaker
This deck is VERY good using Scyther/Mime/Buzz and the newest
Bad boy…Mewtwo (Movie promo). He
gets a huge lead on me; all I’m drawing is Pokemon and the wrong energy.
I quickly fall behind as he gets 3 prizes of my Mr.
Mime/Magmar/Electabuzz. I was
able to slow down the deck with removals, but he still was able to get 3
prizes. I notice he is Oaking
and Billing a lot to keep his deck moving.
So I go into mainly defense mode…I’m able to make a bounce back
with Electabuzz Thunderpunching a selection of 3 different Pokemon, putting
them all into Meditate range. I’m
able to now bringing the prizes at 3 for me and 2 for him, what a comeback!
Our decks are both low, I have 5 cards left and he has 4 so it is
very close. He then asks me how
many cards I have in my hand, I’m guessing you have to tell, but I’m not
sure I fan out my hand showing that I have 6.
He has an Imposter I’m thinking.
But luckily he doesn’t have it…Pheww…With that in mind I keep
my hand at 7, no matter what. I‘m
able to kill his Mewtwo and tie the prizes at 2-2.
His deck is now at 3 and mine at 4, and he has no more tricks up his
sleeve and plays a Comp. Search for fun to see what he had left.
No Imposter, I believe he forgot to put it into his deck, that’s
relief, he concedes afterwards and I get the win!

Round 5-VS Mike R. with Curse Deck
Mike is playing a good
Curse deck; I myself have one using Gastly line, Slowpoke line and
colorless support. Mike is
playing with Gastly line, which is all I see, but previous encounters
showed Jynx, Hypno and Promo Mewtwo.
He starts with 2 Gastlies and my Electabuzz and Magmar.
I send out Magmar and Smokescreen his Gastly.
He tries to lick but it fails, I Pluspower and Smog the next turn
and able to roll even for a prize. He
sends out his next Gastly and evolves it, with no energy.
I go, and Smog, his Transparency works. Grr... He goes and plays an
energy. I go remove it and
try another Smog, this time it succeeds with the main damage and the
poison damage. He goes and
still he has no more basics, his transparency succeeds on my Poison
damage. So I go for the win
and Smog again, if heads I win if tails the match goes on.
Well his transparency rolls odd and I win.

Well
there you go, I bounced back from last week and won this weeks, it
wasn’t easy though, but it was certainly valuable playing experience.
I won a Inquest Gamer Magazine, three Fossil Booster and one 1st
Edition Fossil Booster. In
them was 1st Edition Muk, Hitmonlee, Gengar and a
Holo-Dragonite, not too bad the Gengar I got can go straight to my Curse
deck! As for the others I’m
planning to sell them to Comic World some time, a lot of them to sell
sometime to Comic World. Remember
Comic World, yeah its one dumb store, prices that rip you off, crap
tourneys and his shop smells.
Well
let’s review this weeks PROPS and SLOPS!
PROPS to
John H. and his new deck creation it is very good.
PROPS to
Dan C. and Mike R. I seem to
play them a lot and win easily, so congrats on good efforts.
PROPS to
Comic World for having high prices so they have to buy at high prices
to…$35 for a Holo-Dragonite?!?! That’s
what a Daniel B. told me
SLOPS to Comic World for trying for aggressively pushing and
yelling at Daniel B. for saying his shop smells like ***,
hey I don’t blame him.
Well
that’s all for this weeks edition and incase your wondering how I’m
doing with my DCI Rating stuff. Well
I’m now 5th in the World! Rock on only 5 more places and
I’ll be the highest rated player for Pokemon Constructed tourneys!
Also my rating is now I believe 1984, my year of birth too
Further more Déjà vu posted some other info about the players
that play there. According to
there latest posting, I have a 91% chance of winning and I have 228 total
DCI points add the 15 on and I have 243 points.
Even more I have now been to 17 Sanctioned tourneys which is a good
bit of experience I must say. Not
to mention a handful of Comic World ones, but they just suck so don’t
include them…
Till next time,
Ryan T.
