Name: Nicolas "NZA" Duran age 19
Deck: Firewall 2000
Place: Kool Kollectibles in Las Vegas, Nevada
Date: December 4th
Decks record: 5-1 Finishing 3rd overall w/ 30+ people
What up Pojo, the names Nicolas Duran and I'm a long time fan
of the
pojo. This was a tourney held at Kool Kollectibles in Las Vegas.
There were
a good 30 people there and it last just over 4 hours. It is set up for 4
rounds, 1 match per round, then they set up the Top 8 "playoffs".
I went 5-1
on my first try which aint quite bad. Anyway, heres my deck.....
FIREWALL 2000
Aren't we all tired of these boring Alakazam, Chansey, Pokecenter stall
decks? I know I am. Oh and just for you knowledge, I have played
against 4
stall decks so far and have not lost once. I think its time for a change.
This is the stall deck of the future, and its actually fun to play too!
4 Moltres
4 Magmar (Fossil)
3 Chansey
1 Likitung
1 Mr. Mime
21 Fire Energy
4 Energy Retrieval
4 Scoop Up
4 Poke Center
4 Gust of Wind
2 Imposter Oak
2 Comp Search
2 Item Finder
3 Bill
1 Prof oak
<><> Now everyone see Moltres and say he sucks cause he needs 4
energies to
do his attack and its a 50/50 chance. I couldn't agree more, but I don't
do
his Dive Bomb. The whole point of Moltres is to Wildfire them until they
run
out of cards. The only guy that attacks is Magmar (smokescreen is perfect for
stalling) and Likitung (paralyzing and confusing....even more stalling) Mr
Mime is just there for his poke power (Blastoise, Wigglytuff, Arcanine....
got to be careful w/ these guys). Now that you know how to play it, here
are
the tourney results.
Round 1 vs ______? (I am new to this place so I didnt know
that many names)
The kid I plated was about 10 yrs old and said he was fairly new to the game.
His deck was water and colorless so I got a little nervous, but then again
only Magmar actually has the water weakness. I start out w/ Moltres and
Likitung and he has Articuno and Lapras. I had a full hand of energy so I
simply started to wildfire. It took him 5 turns before he could get
Articuno
powered up enough to do freeze dry, by that time I had wildfired 4 cards away
and he had already oaked. Luckily he had another Articuno on his bench, so
I
gust of wind it out and stall some more. This is where he makes the
mistake
of telling me he has no energy removals in his deck, so I. Scoop up Moltres
and bring out Chansey to stall. While Chansey does his thing I get 2
Moltres
fully powered, 4 energy on 1, 8 on the other! So I let Chansey get KO'd
and
bring out Moltres to dive bomb for a while. I kill 3 of his guys before
Moltres goes down, but by that time he has 11 cards left and my benched
Moltres has 12 energies. Bring him up and Wildfire.... GAME.
Round 2 vs ______? Record 1-0
This kid was playing a psychic/colorless stall deck. Kangaskhans, Snorlaxs,
Likitungs and Alakazams. Retreat costs are way up there so this works out
good for me. I open with a Magmar, Chansey, Poke Center and energy.
He
starts w/ Likitung and Snorlax. First thing I do is Gust for Snorlax and
smokescreen. Bringing up Snorlax almost became a problem however, as he
managed to get 2 Double Colorless on him in 3 turns, and I don't play Energy
Removal, so I had to re-gust out a Kangaskhan. That did the trick.
Finally
about 15 turns into the game I get a Moltres out and start to wildfire while
he has a Snorlax w/ no energy up front. By the way, on my first wildfire I
made him discard his only Alakazam! So that was pretty much it. With
Moltres up and a full hand of Scoop ups, poke centers, and Energy retrievals,
the game was over.
Round 3 vs Marcus (last name unknown) Record 2-0
Im playing against Marcus, although I am fairly new to this tourney I do know
that he is one of the top 4 players here. His deck is grass/colorless and
focuses on Venusaur and his Poke Power in combination w/ Wigglytuff and
Exxegutor. I open with a Magmar and a Moltres, but decide to start with
Magmar knowing he plays grass and Venusaur can be a big problem. I had
plenty of energy, retrievals, and scoop ups handy so I could go for quite a
while without getting worried..... then it happened. In one turn he oaked
and got out a his Venusaur, Exxegutor, and Wigglytuff...... I was in trouble.
I had some Poke Centers and scoop ups in my hand and luckily he only had 4
benched guys so Wiggly wasn't going to do quite as much damage. So I
brought
up Moltres and gusted for Exxegutor figuring I had the best odds of surviving
with him out there. I wildfired and got him to discard 7 or 8 cards before
he could kill Moltres. But I was incredibly luckily and pulled out from my
deck my only Mr Mime. He had a wiggly w/ 3 benched, another
exxegutor,
Scyther, and Venusaur., so I simple let Moltres die and brought up
Mr Mime
to stall. He tried to lullaby me to get rid of Mimes pokepower, but I kept
waking up and decked him with him having 2 prizes left. Thank You Mr.
Mime.
Round 4 vs Alan Record 3-0
(by the way, Alan looked to be in his late 20's; who says Pokemons just for
kids?)
Wow...... another stall deck, but this one had a little power to it. It
had
the basic Alakazam, Onix, and Chansey thing going....but it also had 4 promo
Mewtwos in it...Ouch!! My only hope was to rely on my Likitungs and
Chanseys
to stall out Mewtwo, but he also had a few Machops, so this was going to be
tough. I looked at my opening hand and I was in some deep......you know.
I
had 1 Magmar and nothing but energy! He had an Onix and the Promo Mewtwo
doing the attacking. Luckily he didn't have enough psychic energy so I
took
him 4 turns to power up Mewtwo. My Magmar had 40 damage and 5 turns into
the
game, I still had no other basics!!! What can I say about
smoke
screen..... it is so powerful. I stayed alive for 2 extra turns because of
it, which was just enough time for me to pull out a Chansey and a Moltres! He
only had his Onix, 2 Mewtwos, and a kadabra out.... so I just kept wildfiring
and gust of winding out his pokemon w/ high retreats and no energy. With a
full hand of poke centers, scoops, and item finders..... it was just a matter
of time. Game over..........I'm actually 4-0!!!
Final 8 playoffs.
Record 4-0 vs James
Im going up against a type of energy removal deck which relies on Dragonair,
Hitmonchans and Hitmonlees.....luckily not only do I rarely build up energy
on my pokemon......but Moltres has resistance to Fighting! He put up a
good
fight at first, gust of winding up my Likitung and magmas up for the
kills... but no matter. I had a Moltres up and a Moltres benched with a
full
hand of energies, retrievals, scoop ups and poke centers. All he had left
was a Dragonair and Hitmonlee on the bench w/ no energy on either and a
Hitmonlee active. With only 20 damage at a time (stretch kick or Hi Jump
Kick w/ resistance) and my hand full of scoop ups and poke centers,
he
forfeited the game with about 10 cards left in his deck.
Top 4 Me vs Eric (another top player)
Record 5-0 Playing to see who goes into game for 1st and 2nd
Wow! 6 games into the Tournament and I finally run into a Haymaker deck.
I'm surprised it took this long. This guy was good from what I had over
heard throughout the day. He played the same type of Haymaker I do,
Elecatabuzz, Magmar, Scyther, and.......DITTO!! Ditto against my
Moltres.....this had to chance of decking me out... but he would have run out
of energy so I don't know if he would take the chance. I opened with a
Moltres, a Chansey and a Magmar with 3 energy and 1 scoop up. He opened w/
Scyther and Electabuzz. He was dishing out the damage fast, like any
Haymaker. I wasn't used to taking damage so fast so it was a problem at
first. I really couldn't rely on keeping Moltres out there long so I had
to
rely on Chansey and Magmars smokescreen. It worked for a while, but then he
got his Magmars out and poisoned my pokemon, which really hurt me.
Pokecenter could only stall it for so long. After some time he had only 8
cards left to my 12....he got Ditto out and took a few wildfires early on,
but not so much to run out of energy. Then the 1 thing I never thought
would
happen, happened. With a good 15 cards left in his hand, he used a
LASS!
That changed his deck from 5 cards to 13 and I only had 11! With 5 prizes
left for me and 2 for him, I knew it was over, but I didn't quit. I got
out
a Moltres and got wildfire going again, but then he pulled out a ditto and
wildfired me. Game.
I came in 3rd place in a tournament with over 30 and it was the first time I
used this deck. Not bad at all. And in case you wanted to
know, 3rd place
won me 3 Fossil boosters, first would have gotten me 7. I
still love this
deck and plan on playing it a lot more. This is a stall deck of the
future,
so don't be surprised to see it pop up everywhere soon. Well, I hope you
all
enjoyed my detailed report, this took me a good hour to write. Thanks to
all!
