Hey PoJo please post this in the killer deck reports...
Well since I had my first tournament victory last week,
I decied to go
try my luck again. The tournament on October 14 this week at Gateway Comics
and More in Erie Pa, had about 20 people. I was again playing the miracle of
modern pokemon, the poor man's haymaker. In case you did not read my last
report, here is what's in the deck....
Pokemon
4 Machop
4 Charmander
3 Rattata
3 Farfetch'd
3 Magmar
Trainers
4 Bill
4 Energy Removals
4 PlusPower
2 Gust of Wind
2 Professor Oak
1 Energy Retreival
1 Scoop Up
Energy
15 Fire Energy
10 Fighting Energy
Now for the report... ( there was again only one game per round )
Round 1 vs. a Extremely Weird Haymaker
In the early turns, it was all going my way. I hit a leek
slap on the
first turn to take out an Abra. But then, things went downhill as Electrabuzz
and Scyther came on out. I managed to lose only two Farfetches before Machop
came out and hammered Electrabuzz. Scyther came on down and slashed my Machop
to death. All while this was going on he had an Abra on the bench?! I finally
managed to get Charmander out and ember for 60. The game was finally in my
favor. But then came the part why this haymaker was so weird. He busts out a
breeder and * gasp * Alakazam. Scyther is damage free and is in no danger. He
had me to the point where he only needed two prizes to win. The very next
turn I drew and oak, used it, and got a dream hand. I quickly started to pump
a Magmar on the bench, made Rattata active, and gust out the big energyless
Alakazam. After Rattata killed him off, Magmar came in and roasted Scyther.
But I have to hand to this kid, if it wasn't for a dream oak he had me.
Record 1-0
Round 2 vs. A Gengar Deck
After a hectic round one, it was nice to see I caught a break
against a
mono psy deck. I started out slow, with Farfetch and pulled my self even at
five prizes left. He had Jynx out fighting while he thought he could easily
pump up to Gengar on the bench. THINK AGAIN. The next few turns were a blur,
but I do remember an oak in which I got ALL THREE RATTATAS. Boy, this game
was now over. Rattata could easily kill off his psy pokemon one by one untill
I got my final prize. That is really a big problem for psy is that only one
pokemon ( Kadabra ) can deal damage to someone with resistance.
Record 2-0
Round 3 vs. a Colorless Deck
It's always fun playing a colorless deck, and I was looking forward to
this
match. But my opponent withdrew due to sickness. ( In case you were wondering
how I knew what kind of deck he had, I always ask before a game... )
Record 3-0
Round 4 vs. a deck based on Golem?!
Before the match, I just kept asking myself how such a slow deck could
make
it this far. And I could only think of one thing, he was very lucky with his
coin flips. Geodude is only efective if your lucky. And during the match I
found out this kid was....
He starts out with a Zubat, and a benched Geodude. I draw a damn Rattata and
a Machop. Not exactly what I was hoping for ( Farfetch ). My Rattata was
deadly so far in this tournamnet so I start him and manage to deal 20 to
Zubat before he is retreat in favor of Geodude. I am telling you this kid
belongs in vegas, he rolled seven heads in a row ( he only needed two, but he
wanted to keep going ). I play Machop and low kick for twenty. He evovles
into Graveler, and keeps taking damage untill he has the energy to
seldestruct ( I'm not exactly sure if it's called self destruct, but it's
that type of move ). I finally realized he can play like this, because he is
a prize ahead and can afford to kill himself. I know I have to just pray for
Farfetch. I draw and get a bill., use it and get Charmander and Gust of Wind.
I don't feel like dealing with Geodude, so I gust out zubat and scratch.
Zubat is helpless and eventually dies from ember. At this point I am down
enough prizes so that I am worrying. But he goes to draw a card and *poof*
nothing! I win by decking him. Sure it's cheap, but at least I got out of
this match...
Record 4-0
Round 5 vs. a Snorlax Deck
I had never actually played against or used a Snorlax, so I didn't know
what to expect. I did know that he is incredibly slow ( four retreat cost )
and gust of wind would help in this match. He starts out with good ol'
Snorlax, and a benched dratini. I have Magmar and a Machop. Machop goes out
and deals some heavy damage to Snorlax. And since his high retreat cost, he
eventually dies. By now, Dratini is Dragonair and has no trouble with taking
out Machop. But luckily my heavy hitter, Magmar, is pumped with energy and
two flamethrowers take out dragonite ( he evolved after the first
flamthrower, and missed with body slam ). Since he had no other basics in
play, I win!
Record 5-0 ( that's 9-0 in my first two tournaments since being back )
MY SECOND TOURNAMENT VICTORY! I am in a great mode and my deck is playing
solid. I have to hand to the guys this week, the competition was alot better
this week. This weeks prize was like last weeks, 2 fossil boosters and
instead of a Power Reserve, I got a Brushfire ( Ninetales Baby! ). In the
boosters, I got an Omastar. Next time I come, I will probably play a
different deck. Untill next time...
PoJo, thank you for your time( keep up the GREAT work )....
