Pokemon Tournament
San Diego, California
Name of the Game
10-24-99
15 participants
The format we used in this tournament was a 3 round swiss draw, with a
final four playing off for the winnings at the end (fossil was legal for this
tournament). The most popular deck there was definitely haymakers, there were
like 8 of them out of 15 people, and i got lucky because my deck matched up
well against them. Here it is:
25 Electric energy
Pokemon:
4 Zapdos
4 Electabuzz
2 Aerodactyl
Trainers:
2 Professor oak
4 Bill
4 Plus Power
4 Switch
4 Scoop Up
4 Gust of Wind
3 Mysterious Fossil

First Round:
Played against Steve, playing a Fire deck.
Steve's deck was based around Magmar (fossil version), rapidash, and
ninetails. He also had a few Moltres as well. First game i took with an
electabuzz that successfully paralyzed steve's pokemon on 7 consecutive
thundershocks. Second, i took because my benched aerodactyl kept him from
evolving his ponytas and vulpix, and zapdos took them out in one hit each
with thunder (and a few pluspowers at the right times.) Third, i cruised to
victory because his only basic was a ponyta that my electabuzz took out on
second turn with a thunderpunch.
Record: 3-0

Second round opponent: ???, playing a water/grass deck
i dont remember the name of my opponent, but he was playing a deck based
around scythers, blastoise, and articuno. First game i won because i went
first and second turn evolved my benched mysterious fossil to an aerodactyl,
preventing him from ever evolving to a blastiose. Second game i lost because
my opening hand was 3 zapdos, 3 scoop up, and one energy. I wasnt able to
recover quickly enough, because it was 4 turns before i drew another energy.
3rd game, i won with an electabuzz taking out his first 2 pokemon, and  a
zapdos coming in to thunder + plus power a scyther for 70 damage, and
thunderbolting his last pokemon for the kill
Record 2-1, total: 5-1

3rd round Opponent: Sean AKA "999 Hurley International" playing a typical
haymaker deck
Sean had a big problem taking out my zapdos's, because they could take out
his scythers (his only non-fighting pokemon) in one hit with a pluspower, and
they're resistant to all his fighting pokemon. In all three games, a single
zapdos took out 3 or 4 of his pokemon, running him out.
Record: 3-0, total: 8-1

Finals
The finals were run with the top four winners in the three rounds playing.
The top seed of these four (Me) played the bottom seed (???), and the middle
two playing as well. The winners of these two matches played for first and
second, and the losers played off for 3rd place.

Finals, Round 1 Opponent: ???, yes the same ??? as my second round opponent.
This time i had less difficulty beating him, as he got bad draws in both
games. He never was able to evolve his squirtles, and i killed his scythers
and articunos before they had enough energy on them to be a threat. Second
game i drew 3 hands before getting a basic, spotting him 6 cards, but luckily
i was able to recover with lots of trainers. I used both of my professor oaks
and all 4 pluspowers in that game.

Finals, Round 2: Opponent: ??? (brother of first ???)
This match was for first and second, and my opponent was playing a haymaker
deck that i had little trouble dealing with, because my zapdos's could hardly
be damaged by his hitmonchans and hitmonlees. The scythers that he had were
dealt with with pluspowered thunder attacks from zapdos, and this won me the
match, and the tournament.
