Tournament Report
Say Hey Sportscards and Comics
Olathe, KS
11-13-1999
I was playing what I called Anti-Haymaker(Magmar + Farfetch'd instead of
Scyther... need Scythers badly). This was my second real Pokemon Tournament,
but I was fairly sure I'd see 3-4 Haymakers at least. Turns out there were
only 11 people. The entry fee was $4 (I suppose this isn't too bad), and it
was 4 games Swiss, DCI sanctioned.
Here's the Deck:
Anti/Haymaker
4x Hitmonchan -- Haymaker normal card, anti-Electabuzz
4x Electabuzz(basic) -- Haymaker normal card, anti-Water
4x Magmar(fossil) -- Anti-Scyther
4x Farfetch'd -- Anti-Hitmonchan
4x Energy Removal
4x Professor Oak
4x Plus Power
2x Super Energy Removal
9x Fire Energy
9x Electric Energy
9x Fighting Energy
3x Double Colorless Energy
Game 1 -- Against Jonathan's Real Haymaker.
This game started well... I was able to stop a Scyther and Hitmonchan, but
more entered play. Farfetch'd got ER'd too much, Hitmonchan met Scyther,
Magmar couldn't get energy, Electabuzz met Hitmonchan. He retreated a
60-damaged Scyther back, and I couldn't pull any energy to destroy that, the
Hitmonchan with 30 damage, or the Electabuzz with 40 damage. Not good.
Couldn't find an Oak; after the game I found the 2 SER's on the bottom of the
deck :( Loss. 0-1, 0 Points.
Game 2 -- Bye (went to lowest person)
Although I hate byes, I suppose a free win isn't so bad. 1-1, 3 Points.
Looked around the store and read Scrye over again.
Game 3 -- Against Matt's Water Deck.
Well... this guy had worked on his deck. I start with Electabuzz, Magmar and
Pluspower and Professor Oak in my hand. He started Articuno and quickly got
out two more. Luckily, I pulled an SER and 2 normal Energy Removals.
Electabuzz flipped 3 tails in a row, but still took out Squirtle and all 3
Articunos. That was all of his basics. The Energy Removal had hurt him too
much to do anymore than kill Electabuzz and Magmar. Win, 2-1, 6 Points.
Game 4 -- Against Drew's Grass + Water Deck
He started w/2 Pinsirs. I get lucky with opening 2 Magmars and 3 Fire Energy.
2 Energy Removals dealt with them. Magmar did the damage. He found another
Pinsir which died, and his last two Pokemon, Squirtle and Poliwag, succumbed
to Electabuzz. Win, 3-1, 9 Points.
Turns out Jonathan from Game 1 got second. A lone undefeated person got
first. Which left me and a kid named Scott tied and playing for third and $13
store credit. Loser takes nothing :(. As I commented before the game, "This
is too tense."
Game 5 -- Against Scott's Almighty Flying Bugs(Beedrill + Butterfree) +
Water(Blastoise evolution set)
I get Magmar and 2 Fire Energy again. Wish this occurred in Game 1 as well...
He starts with Weedle, Squirtle and Caterpie. Squirtle and Caterpie try to
build up as Weedle dies for the cause, but Super Energy Removal stops such
sentiments. He can't attack for much, Electabuzz shocks Squirtle, and the 2
minute game so ends.
I get the $13 Store Credit and with it a pack of Gym 2(my favorite) and
Basic(American). Pull Dugtrio, Giovanni's Trump Card and Giovanni's
Persian(Holo). I have realized a few things about 3 colors... it doesn't work
as well as I would have hoped.
Props...
to the director being polite and knowledgeable
to everyone saying good game
to the store for cheap Japanese packs
Slops...
to the kids for randomly screaming
to kids staring at me(14 isn't that old)
to fate giving me a bye
Very fun tournament. As a final note, I take out Pluspowers for Energy on a
11-14-99 tournament, and get 3rd out of 25[better]. This starts my fun
routine of going to Battlezone Sundays, and I'll soon start writing reports
on the games there.
Thanks for posting,
