Haymaker’s Potpourri Variant v. 3.5
Gym: Heroes Release Tourney
Saturday, August 5th,
2000
Basic Outline:
Well, this is the
first Report I’m sending in, to the PoJo! What better time to do this than the
Gym: Heroes Release Tourney. I’m using my Haymaker’s Potpourri Variant. Scott
Gerhardt, assistant webmaster of PoJo.com, designed the original Potpourri.
Scott’s Fossil Potpourri can be found in Pojo’s Pokemon Magazine for the month
of February, I believe.
Tweaking: What I basically did was drop out Mimes, Ponyta and Kang for
Fossil Magmars and an extra Electabuzz. Also, switched the trainers around ever
so slightly. This deck has worked great for the past couple months for me. It
may look like I draw slim to no energy, and the drawing methods are off, but it
works great. I’ve tried and tried to listen to people who told me to play 4
Bill and Oak, but that didn’t work out, and I lost more games than I have ever
with this deck. So I’m sticking with my first instinct, my original deck. Well,
I’ll let you take a look at the deck below: I’ll tell you the contents and
briefly explain why chosen:
Haymaker’s
Potpourri v. 3.1
Pokemon

4
Electabuzz – Very little energy need to T-Punch for a possible 40.
3
Hitmonchan – Must metagame against Wigglytuff here.
3
Scyther – To combat Hitmonchan.
2 Fossil
Expansion Magmar – Basically screws Scyther. Helps me stall towards the end of
the game

9
Fighting
7
Electric
4 Fire
2 DCE
Trainers
(26):
3 Bill
2 Oak

Well,
there you have it. The Potpourri Variant I used what I believe is the right mix
of trainers to help this deck succeed. This deck I’ve tweaked and tweaked until
I got it right. Now that we finally have Gym: Heroes, I’m thinking about making
a Trapper Variant. I hopefully will manage to get a hold of four Team Rocket’s
Trap from the expansion. This deck basically functions on these rules:
1.
Always
start with a low-retreat pokemon
2.
Metagame
to each opponent
3.
Match-up
with weakness / resistance (i.e.: Opponents Wiggly – you send out Hitmonchan,
etc. you get the point!)
4.
Use
Scoop Up sparingly, only when need. I’ve won a few games with saving Scoop Up’s
until I had about 60 of 70 damage on my Pokemon and they were paralyzed or
another status effect.
5.
I need
to go and use this deck’s speed during this past tourney, because of the
free-for-all league format. It worked out for me got many quick wins.
I think
the ¾ ER/SER is a good mix. Once Prohibition Gym is put into more decks, I’m
pretty much screwed, but for now, it works, especially against Arcanine and
Wiggly decks. I’m able to SER the Wigglys while still on the bench, hence not
being able to do The Wave. Then, I proceed to GOW out it, with my Hitmonchan in
play and Special Punch for a prize. Simple.
Enough
baffling about my deck, here’s the tournament report. I do have names and deck
types available. Only using pictures with camera such as Tyler Grund did, for
the STS! East Coast STS, baby! Soon!
Tournament Report:
(Sorry, don’t remember much, I was too into the games, so excuse me for the
lack of Detail).
Match #1
vs. Little Kid w/ a Fire Deck (Charizard)
Quick and easy. Got out Hitmon/Scyther/Buzz and never looked back against his Eevees and Blaine’s Tauros.
He got out Mr. Mime and Movie Mewtwo. I just SER’ed him, and took the game with ‘Buzz.
Since we
both moved on, I had to face him again. A little harder because he kept getting
basics out, but his Lickitung’s Tounge Wrap failed and Chan came out with a
Plus Powered Special Punch for the win.
Machop vs. Scyther and Buzz. Scyther stalled, Buzz came out Plus Power T-Punch. Game.
Best fight I had so far. I got out Chan early against All Colorless pokemon, and we exchanged Jabs with his Ditto, until I managed to get Narrow Gym out and prevented him from dropping Scyther out on the bench, and Chan and Buzz just wrecked the house, although he did manage to draw two prizes. We were both guaranteed to move on, so we did not care. Good game, Mike.
Single Elimination
Matches for the Prizes of Gym: Heroes Boosters:
Quarterfinals #1: I got a bye along with Elliott, we were both 6-0 to start, so Bill Chapman gave us both a bye, guaranteeing us each two packs.
Quarterfinals
#2 vs. Evan w/ Clefairy/Clefable Haymaker:
Note: This kid from what I hear is a frequent cheater, so I watched him the whole game, he played clean.

Okay, My
Scyther and Hitmo vs. his Clefairy and Hitmo. I wonder who won this match! Me,
of course, he did get pretty mad because he only won 1 pack for losing!
This was a good game. He defeated my bro with
Mr Mime to move on to this round, and he put up a good fight, but I just kept
matching up with his weakness and resistance for the win in about 15 minutes.
Game 1: I again matched up with his weakness
and my resistance. I got a scare early on from his “Minion of Team Rocket” but
lucky for me he flipping 1 tails and 1 heads, preventing me from losing, so I
had to bring out Scyther on his Chan for a Game One win!
Game 2: We were pretty even early on, trading
prizes, but I oaked a little too much, and we were down low on our decks with
two prizes each left. I Slashed his Hitmo for a kill. Then, with five cards
left in my deck, ten in his, I drew an Item Finder, for the GOW, Gusted out a
hurt Gastly and T-Punched for the win!
Well, there you have it, the report. I
ended up winning 5 extra packs in addition to the two in the beginning. Not bad
cards inside, A No Removal Gym and some other great rares!
