This was Caveman's second DCI sanctioned tournament and they mentioned two
weeks ago that they were opening up competition to all ages (a DCI
requirement) other parents were going to play so I figured I through my hat
into the ring.
Lainie age 11, plays with a modified Haymaker - This deck stops pokemon
powers cold and we call it the MUKmaker

I, Dad, age Old, play with everything I couldn't get the other two to put in
their decks even though I went out an bought it. We'll call it HitMagPsi
Quite by accident it turned out to be quite a Haymaker killer.

There were 32 people in the tournament. We play five games initially in our
age catagory. Rob was in 10 and under, Lainie was in 11-15, and Dad was in
16 and older. There was no Senior Citizen catagory. Anyhow the first two
games you are matched in your age catagory according to wins or losses. From
that point on you are catigorized by wins. The top eight by wins and
strength of schedule go into a single elemination tournament.
Round 1:
Rob played John a regular 3rd or 4th place winner in these tournaments.
John's mix of Hitmonchans and Gastly-Haunters was just too much for his
Magmar/Jynx mixture.
Lainie played a guy with a grass deck. Hitmonchan killed everything
Dad played John's mom who had to pick from all the pokemon that John
couldn't trade away. Squirtle and Ratita just didn't hold up well. She took
no prizes.
Rob 0-1, Lainie 1-0, Dad 1-0
Round 2:
Rob got a bye-a kid dropped out so he had a free turn. He played another kid
who was hanging around with an electric deck. He won.
Lainie got a really bad draw with just hitmonchan. The other kid got out a
Chancey and then two sythers. With just one pokemon she got knocked out
quickly. This gave her a chance to eat some lunch.
Dad played another parent with gastly-haunter & Clafable. It was some kind
of delay deck his kid had put together and he didn't have a clue as to how
it worked. It was a long game and even with the 20 minute limit dad almost
got decked. Time was called dad won by prizes with only 5 cards left in the
discard pile. He should have spent more time thinking.
Rob 1-1, Lainie 1-1, Dad 2-0
Round 3:
Rob played a kid with a fighting deck who couldn't understand Mr Mime at
all. He put out Ryhorn and did horn attack 30-no damage three turns Mr. Mime
had killed him. He put out another Ryhorn - some people never learn.
Lainie played a kid with a water/psy/colorless deck. He could never get
Clafary out long enough to do much damage. Electrabuz and Hitmonchan took
care of everything in no time. After Dad finished a quick game he came over
a peered at the table and said "You need a Gust of Wind" then left.
Two
turns later after Lainie had taken 4 prizes and the other guy hadn't taken
any he threw his hand in and claimed Lainie cheated. Not a good sport. He
had been bragging that he was going to win the entire tournament before it
started and he hadn't won a game yet. The tournament guy told him that he
need to say something earlier and declared Lainie the winner.
Dad played a teen who had a water colorless deck. No Blastoise to be seen
though. He kept griping that he couldn't use his Jpnze cards. Quick game though.
Rob 2-1, Lainie 2-1, Dad 3-0
Round 4:
Rob played a water/fighting deck. The kid jumped out in front 2 prizes
taking out a Magmar and Jynx then Rob got his Electrabuzz out he took out
the kids Wartortle and was then KO'd by Chancey. Hitomonchan came out and
took out Chancey and with Articuno out Rob put out another Buz one turn
later time was called. He lost by prizes.
Lainie played a kid with a fire deck. Buzz and Hitmonchan were just too
much. Scyther stayed on the bench. Archanine just couldn't get enough energy
to work well.
Dad played a kid that was eating Taco Bell. This kid did real well in the
last tournament with a straight Haymaker but he wanted to modify it for this
tournament. Somehow replacing the Electrabuzzes with Pikachu's isn't a good
modification. Just say Hitmonchan and gust of winds. The kid was done in
plenty of time to eat.
Rob 2-2, Lainie 3-1, Dad 4-0
Round 5
Rob was out of the running for the tournament and he played a very
unmotivated kid with a mix of stuff. Unfortunately he only got out a
hitmonlee and Rob was able to use Magmar's posion attack. Very quick game.
Lainie played Kyle, the kid who taught her brother to play at another stores
tournament. Kyle like works for that store running their tournaments. He has
access to any cards he wants and put together a by the book Haymaker. Lainie
got a quick lead using Hitmonchan against electrabuz and only letting Kyles
Hitmonlees (put in to replace Machop) get enough energy to stretch kick so
her Electrabuz could KO it. Good close game. Lainie Won.
Dad played the Thomas who won the last three times at caveman. He has a
Haymaker and really knows how to play it. Energy Removals were flying
everywhere. Thomas jumped out to a two prize lead using Pluspowers when Dad
wasn't expecting it. Toward the end though when energy on both sides was
getting scarce it was the Movie Mewtwo that took over the game. Energy
Absorbsion kept Dad attacking and taking the his last prize. Thomas was down
to just two cards in his deck, dad only eight.
Rob 3-2, Lainie 4-1, Dad 5-0
Both Dad and Lainie went to the final eight . Dad was the only undefeated
person in the first part of the tournament.
Round 1 elimination phase:
Lainie verses Thomas the Haymaker. Two haymakers in a row was just too much
for Lainie it was close but she ended up with just a grimer out and it
didn't take long for her to go down. She was out.
Dad played a kid with a good Fire deck. He only had a Mr. Mime for the first
two turns Vulpix confused rayed him. Dad drew another Mr. Mime, scooped up
and delayed for a couple more turns. Energy Removals kept the Fire deck off
balance for awhile. Finaly a Prof Oak came up Dad's had began to grow and
the fire guy went down in flames.
Round 2 Elimination phase
Dad played Kyle and his haymaker. Dad mulliganed twice so Kyle started out
with a four card advantage. He quickly went up two prizes using Electrabuz t
ko Jynx and Mr. Mime. While dad built his hand and the bench. Movie Mewtwo
came out and started doing the damage and time was called. Kyle and Dad were
tied with five prizes left each. The had to play a sudden death match.
To start Kyle mulliganed three times. Dad had a six card advantage. Even
with that Kyle only got a Scyther, Dad had out Magmar. Two turns Kyle had lost.
Final Round:
Dad played Kindal a consistant winner who had put together a Fire/Fighting
deck. Lot's of Energy Removals went back and forth, round after round. Dad
was up KOing Basic Magmar and Hitmonchan the game had progressed and energy
was short when out came Movie Mewtwo to do his energy thing and Kindal was
toast.
