Wigglytuff and
the Purple Crayon
a deck by Daniel Duterte
Hi, it's me Daniel and I'm here to report on my latest tournament experience. I'm using a deck I created two nights before the tournament called Wigglytuff and the Purple Crayon. The tournament was at Games Galore on May 27th in Raleigh, North Carolina and about 20 people attended.
Pokemon 4 Jigglypuff 3 Wigglytuff 2 Mew 2 Movie Mewtwo 2 Kangaskhan 2 Gastly (Fossil) |
Trainers 4 Bill 4 Professor Oak 2 Challenge! 1 Nightly Garbage Run 2 Energy Retrieval 2 Gust of Wind 3 Computer Search 3 Scoop Up 3 Lass 4 PlusPower 2 Item Finder |
Energy 12 Psychic Energy 4 Double Colorless Energy |
This deck is all about speed. You want Wigglytuff with a full bench on turn two so you can Do the Wave for 60. This almost kills those Haymaker Pokemon, just by 10, so we have 4 PlusPower. As for the other monster choices, Mew can wreck a pesky power like a Dark Vileplume or something. Movie Mewtwo has just changed the environment like nothing and is a staple of offensive purple decks now. If you're not Wiggly with it yet, then Kangaskhan can stall and find Wiggly. Gastly is a Mr. Mime killer and can serve to retrieve dead Double Colorless Energies, and has resistance to Fighting, which is groovy in a Haymaker enviroment (like mine).
12 Psychic energy is sufficient, since many of the monsters only need a single energy to operate (Wigglytuff with DCE, Mew, Movie Mewtwo to Energy Absorb, Kangaskhan, and Gastly). And I'm running Energy Retrieval so it's fine. Double Colorless, as noted above, is to power Wigglytuff up quickly with its 3 Energy Cost on turn two.
Bill and Professor Oak are a must in most any deck, especially ones that are bent on speed like Wiggly decks. That's why I have 4 of each! I wanted to add a few Rocket cards so that all of my cards won't go to waste (or something like that). Challenge! is a great card. Either pump up Wiggly or get a free Bill. Most players will just say yes (talking about young, 10 and younger). Some intermediates will say no, so then you run another Bill, so potentially you have 6 Bill in your deck! Expert players will use this to their liking, so try and use it when they have a full bench and you don't, or if they're running many evolutions with crappy basics (cough, Magikarp). Nightly Garbage Run is to get dead Wigglys and basics into your deck to Oak for. Why only one? Well, I only have one . . . =( Energy Retrieval is to get energy back, and what wrong with that. Gust of Wind brings out weenie Pokemon that can be taken in one hit without PlusPower, like Jigglypuff, Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Base Set Mewtwo, etc. Computer Search is to find any card in your deck and bring it out, and what's wrong with that? Scoop Up is in to save Kangaskhans and Mews and Mewtwos and sometimes Wigglytuffs (I've had to Scoop Up an evolved Pokemon, let me tell you sometimes you just gotta). Lass has come a long way since January 1999. This card is amazing when used right. Get rid of Wigglytuff's nemesis, Super Energy Removal. I would run Rocket Sneak Attack instead or even just alongside it, but I don't have any but I really want lotsa of em! PlusPower is to kill Hitmonchans and Fossil Magmars and Electabuzzes in one devastating blow. Item Finder is mainly to find PlusPower so that essential you have the necessary 6 PlusPowers to destroy a Haymaker deck, but the great thing is that you can tailor it to your situation. About to lose, need a miracle? Professor Oak comes out. Need Wiggly? Computer Search (although that is quite costly, you'd discard four cards!)
The Tournament
Round 1 vs. David
(Grass/Fire Rocket deck)
Started slow. Kangaskhan came out and started to fetch.
His Fossil Magmar began Smogging and beating down Kangaskhan. He
was knocked out but I had built some basics and sent forth a
Jigglypuff and put a PlusPower and Oaked hoping for some basics
and a Wigglytuff. I got Wigglytuff, some basics, but not a full
bench. I used Do the Wave and he tried Smog but luckily no
poison. I finished him off and steamrolled his Voltorb and a Dark
Dragonair and a Dratini. Luckily all the monsters in his deck had
60 or less HP so I didn't need PlusPowers. He sent out Dark
Charmeleon but should've sent out Dratini because D. Charmeleon
was energyless and couldn't attack and I picked up my last Prize.
Win!
Record 1-0, Wigglytuff and the Purple Crayon's all-time record 1-0
Round 2 vs. Tim
(Electabuzz/Ditto/Scyther)
I got overconfident and started Bill-ing like insane! I
had trouble getting everything and he started to stall. It was
getting down to the wire. Wigglytuff had died, so Mewtwo stepped
in and started beating up some guys and he died. I had another
Wigglytuff rarin' to go and knocked out his Active. Then he sent
out a readied Ditto and we dueled it out until he Scooped Up. I
had exhausted my resources and we were down to one prize a piece
when I drew my last card! I couldn't kill his Ditto, and it was a
dissappointing loss. I just need one more card in my deck, argg,
I wish I still had my Lass! Man!
Record 1-1, Deck's all-time record 1-1
Round 3 vs Austin (Poor
Man's Haymaker)
This kid has a cool deck that uses those Poor Man's
Haymaker Pokemon like Staryu and Rocket Charmander and Oaks to do
insane damage with PlusPowers. He started with Charmander and me
Jigglypuff, which were our only two Pokemon. He used Fire Tail
for 20, and then I lullabied back and with an unsuccessful coin
flip he was out of commision for the turn. I slapped a Double
Colorless down and evolved into Wiggly and Oaked. I got a
Kangaskhan and a Jigglypuff. Not enough for the kill, but luckily
I had an Item Finder, which I used to Oak again, getting another
Kangaskhan and finishing him off. Not a pretty win, but a win.
After the match he told me he had 3 PlusPowers in his hand and he
could've killed me on turn one if he had out a Machop. Kinda of
scary to think about . . .
Record 2-1, Deck's all-time record 2-1
Round 4 vs. Johnathan
(Psychic/Fire)
I started with Kangaskhan and Jigglypuff and he had an
Abra nd Moltres. I took a chance and started fetching. He
couldn't do damage because of resistance. When I was ready with a
full bench I scooped up Kangaskhan and sent a charged up
Jigglypuff. I searched for a Wigglytuff and started steamrolling
him. He did have a Mr. Mime but I had Fossil Gastly. He sent
Moltres out on the last prize and played a Rocket Drowzee and
tried Long Distance Hypnosis, but didn't work. I had PlusPower
and I finished the big bird off!
Record 3-1, Deck's all-time record 3-1
Round 5 vs. Michael
(Fighting/Fire Haymaker)
I faced this guy before the tournament and rolled him. I
rolled him again this time. I put out a Wigglytuff and roughed up
his Chansey and he went BOOM on me (as in he double-edged me and
blew himself up). I started rolling his Ditto with Mew, then I
retreated and manhandled his Hitmonchan with Gastly and finished
the day with Movie Mewtwo.
Record 4-1, Deck's all time record 4-1
I got 5th overall and got one Team Rocket pack. The rare was a non-foil Dark Golbat which I traded for a Rocket Sneak Attack. What was screwy was that the Michael kid I faced last had a worse record than me (3-2) but was 1st in age division and got 3 packs of Rocket! Dang!
