My second ever deck report as I'm finally back more fulltime in the game. From July 2001 to now, I've become a Gym Leader and volunteer helper at my local card store. It's lots of fun, a loose environement with players of all ages willing to become better players. I also do giveaways of cards I no longer need and prizes of my own when they play me. Whether it was a parent saying they were happy that there was somewhere to bring their kids to have fun, or a kid saying they had a great time, the experience is fulfiiling.
Well, here's my deck that I used in our store's first tourney in the new format for Pokemon League. I've been a Brock's Ninetails Project player for over a year now, and I thank TheRealTimbit and other fellow project workers for the help. Comments below on how the deck plays:
The Sleeping Giant Deck
Pokemon(20):
1 Igglybuff (Promo)
2 Genesis Cleffa
2 Genesis Gligar
3 Fossil Gastly
2 Dark Gengar
3 Brock's Vulpix
3 Brock's Ninetails
2 Jungle Wigglytuff
2 Fossil Kabutops
Comments: The sleep and hit theme is here. Iggly, Vulpix, Wiggly and Dark
Gengar all have some sleep for a sure attack. Wiggly, D.Gengar and Tops are the
big hitters, while Gligar, Gastly and Iggly buy time to set up. Cleffa is
search power and a part of an occasional lass combo, while Gastly can also get
back energy. Sleep then wallop.
Energy(14):
4 Rainbow
6 Psychic
3 Double Colorless
1 Recycle
Comments: A problem in the past but this is close to solving it. Rainbow can be
psychic but mainly for Kabutops to attack, or even Gligar to poison. DCE for
Wiggly, Gligar, recycle for the teched SER or to retreat.
Trainers(26):
2 Professor Elm
2 Professor Oak
2 Switch
3 Gold Berry
1 Rocket's Hideout
1 Super Energy Removal
2 Gust of Wind
4 Computer Search
3 Itemfinder
1 Lass
2 Pokemon Breeder
2 Nightly Garbage Run
1 Brock's Protection
Comments: I have 2 Elm now to cut down outdecking losses but still keep draw
power along with 2 Oaks. The usual suspects of Computer Search and Itemfinder
for search power. Switch is the statis effect/gust counter, gold berry heals
after. The hideout seems to be there for a bit as a good beefup gym for the
D.Gengar. SER is teched to have more setup time and protection is to watch out
for my opponent who may occasionally have one. Lass is a good disruption and
even a help with NGR to not outdeck The breeder is the way to get my D.Gengar
but with Niner I can even just have the one D.Gengar out and use the other as
an evolution attacking. Gust of Wind sets up for wins, especially between Pull
ins for D.Gengar.
It was 4 swiss rounds of best 2 out of 3 matches with three prizes each game, best record wins. All players got to walk away with at least a Promo Rainbow energy. (NOTE: I actually hope the League puts out more specialty energy than just holo basic energy. It would be cool to get the holo Dark, Recycle energy for example).
Round One Vs Potpourri Deck (Water/Fighting/Colorless)
This was an easy round versus a novice. I felt bad since it was a novice with many evolutions and such. Gave him an extra Magby I had for just playing me, even if upset. I played the matches to just get the deck warmed up pretty much, with the D.Gengar being the main hitter hitting a Pokemon like a Hitmonchan, then gusting out say a horsea to put it asleep all in one turn. The speed was good today for getting the Pokemon I need out.
2-0
Round Two Vs Gengar Deck (Psychic)
OK, this was TOO surreal, seeing someone use one of my oldest decks against me!!! You have no clue how much it hurts me to fight a Fossil Haunter, a staple of mine for years. Ya, stop laughing TImbit. =P I had to take a staller and speed up the game. The Wiggly sure came in well to clear the field. I actually made tactical errors twice because I forgot the Gengar on the bench and it killed some babies. I got lucky on a flip attack he missed and came back with my Wiggly from the Niner to win two real close matches. Respect the past to move forward.
4-0
Round Three Vs PsyRaindance deck (Water/Psychic)
Wow, the environment here loves psychic guys. I think I'll cry now. **sniff** OK, emotion aside, this was another close match. He didn't have one thing though: more draw power. He sure got the Blastoise out fast via Breeder but I matched it faster with a ready B.Ninetails and some Gligar. I had to hit and run for a bit as he had a bit of energy lacking. First match I cleared away the water and the splashed in Psychic guys in the first match, and the second was again my way due to speed in trainers.
6-0
Round Four Finale Vs Tricolour big guy deck (Fire/Water/Grass)
OK, fought him in the past when I outdecked to lose. He has big beefy basics so he can set up breeder or the long way a Kingdra, Typhlosion or Meganium. Ya, not Expert league player but still a good challenger for top spot. First match was a bit of trouble when the Meganium wiped out a Kabutops on top of my stocked B.Ninetails. I had to stall a bit with Gligars and the Iggly finally, and I got another B.Ninetails up to Wiggly to the win. The second match wasn't as close as Wiggly and Gligar cleared away the Chansey, Kangaskhan and Lickitung that were his big basics.
First tourney in a while and it was fun. Got some Rainbow Energies, a set of promo cards from Season One leftover, some rare cards and 2 boosters. Not a bad haul. But the group is getting better and handled pretty decently for most of them their first tournament format. Looking forward to League as usual. Chow for now!
Final record: 8-0, First Place
