Hey everyone, what’s up? Well, this was my first ever tournament, so I was a little nervous. I calmed down when I learned it wasn’t elimination, but simply based on record after 5 matches. It followed the Modified Swiss format, and there were 26 competitors, myself included. Anyway, on to the deck!

This was a kind of strange deck I made the Wednesday before the tourney. I had planned to go with an old school Rain Dance deck, but when I found out the format was Expedition and up only, I had to rebuild a whole new deck. The focus of the deck was to get either Swampert or Manectric out quick with Rare Candy and Celio’s Network, then start doing 50 a turn, or picking off the bench. Huntail was there in case I fought a deck with a lot of Dark types. Sorry, I don’t remember most of my opponent’s names, but anyway, on to the matches!

 

Round 1: Me (Swampert/Manectric) vs Ben (Gardevoir EX/Wobbuffet)

This was a quick match. I started with a lone Electrike, and he with a Wynaut and Ralts. He went first, attached energy, Rare Candied to Gardevoir (non-EX), Poke Power for another energy on Wynaut, ended turn. I did the same, Headbutted for 10. Next turn, energy on Wynaut, evolve to Wobbuffet, attack for 50, game.

Loss (0-1)

Round 2 Me vs ??? (Metagross EX/Jirachi)

This was a longer match than last game. I started with Electrike and Mudkip I believe, he with Jirachi and Beldum (Magnetic Call). He went first, and got another Beldum out with the Poke Power, then used Make a Wish to get Metang (Levitate). I went, Headbutting for 10. This went on for a few turns till his Jirachi had 60 damage, but by that time he had a Metang on the bench along with 2 other Beldums, and he sent out the Metang with a Switch and evolved to Metagross EX. I held him off for a while with decent use of Water Arrows to pick off Jirachi and Warp Point/Waterfalls to kill weaker Pokes, taking 3 prizes before he took any, but when he got 2 Metal and 2 other energy on the Metagross, he ran through my Electrike and Swampert with Extra Comet Punch.

Round 3 Me vs ??? (Blaziken EX/???)

This was a slightly weird game. I knew he was running Blaze EX, but when we started, all he had was a Pidgey and Rattata (FR/LG). I had a lone Electrike, but since I went first, it became a Manectric with a Rare Candy, Attract Current-ing for 10 and another Lightning. He went, evolved to Raticate, and Quick Attacked. I attached another Energy and ran through both of his Pokes with Thunder Jolt.

Round 4 vs ??? (Venusaur EX/Venomoth/Wartortle FR/LG)

This was a strange deck that my opponent from Round 2 had made for this girl. She started with a Bulbasaur and Squirtle, me with a lone Electrike again. Once again, same as last round, it became a Manectric with the help of a Professor Elm’s Training Method, and started Thunder Jolting 2^nd turn. She held me off with nice use of Sleep Poison, but it was only a matter of time before I ran through her 2 Squirtles and Bulbasaur for the win.

Round 5 Me vs Steven (Articuno EX/Gyarados EX/Gengar EX)

Boy, was this a tough match. He started with a lone Magikarp, and me with Electrike. I had watched this guy play after my first round loss, so I knew what some of his deck consisted of. I knew that Ascension would get the Gyarados EX out 2^nd turn, so I tried to kill it fast, but to no avail. A Mudkip

evolved to Swampert, and I put some damage on the Gyarados with Electrike, but then he brought Articuno EX out with Legendary Ascent, and used Cold Crush to knock out my Electrike. I got 100 damage on it with a Swampert, but he used a Switch for the fully powered Gyarados. Dragon Rage, 100, game.

Loss (2-3)

 

I came in 15^th out of 26^th overall, which I think was decent for my first sanctioned tournament.

I got a Team Magma’s Torkoal for entering, along with a pack of FR/LG and a Tropical Wind promo card from Worlds, and bought 3 HL packs later, in which the only notable things were a rare Metang and holo Gorebyss (I was hoping for Metagross or Metagross EX =/ ). I also traded for 2 Salamences and an Aqua’s Walrein before I left. Time for Props and Slops!
