2004 Pokemon Worlds Championship Report by Johnny Blaze
Worlds was awesome, awesome, awesome.

My Wigglytuff deck gets me Top 32 in the Grinder on Friday night. I'll post a
detailed tourney report tomorrow. But basically everyone was saying Wiggly EX
sucks and I know its true potential. No its not the answer to Magma by no means
and it will get creamed in probably 99% match-ups but I wasn't playing it for
that reason. It has high 1st-2nd turn ohko capability and I have won some local
tourneys with it and it was the most comfortable deck I felt playing Friday
night. I was just so pumped being at Worlds that I didn't even care. I broke out
my Wiggly deck and went to work. Here is the list:
Pokemon – 17
4 – Igglybuff HL (Search for a basic + a basic energy card. How can you go
wrong?)
4 – Jigglypuff HL
3 – Wigglytuff EX
4 – Wynaut
2 – Wobbuffet
Trainers - 30
4 – Professor Oak’s Research
3 – TV Reporter
3 – Steven’s Advice
2 – CopyCat
3 – Pokemon Fan Club
3 – Strength Charm
2 – Rare Candy
4 – Pokemon Reversal
2 – Switch
2 – Magnetic Storm
1 – ATM Rock
1 – Town Volunteers
Energy – 13
9 – Psychic
4 – Boost
Ok here it was my prediction 3 weeks before Worlds, is that a Stage 1 deck would
win it all. For those that read the card reviews on pojo, here it is for the
Rare Candy review:
http://pojo.com/COTD/August2004/09.htm
Little did I know that it was going to be a Magma
deck
to win it but it does contain only basics and stage 1’s.
8/20/04 – Friday night Last Chance Grinder
15+ was around 118 participants. The Top 32 would make it. The 10 and under all
19 participants made it in and in the 11-14 only 24 made it in.
Round 1 vs. Matt Brooks
Matt is from California and was running Sceptile Ex with Muk Ex. My Wobs. were
no where to be seen and would of done little good anyways with this match-up.
Matt killed 2 of my Wigglys with Sceptile EX and Boost energy. There was little
I could do.
L: 0-1
Round 2 vs. Mike Brown
Mike is from Missouri and was playing a Bannette/Gorbyss deck. The Bannette was
giving me problems with its additional damage for each special energy in the
discard. I had about 2 Boost in the discard already. I was up on 2 prizes. Once
I killed the Bannette I easily handled the Gorebyss with my Wigglies.
W: 1-1
3 pts.
Round 3 vs. Robert ?
I didn’t catch his last name but he was from Washington. He was playing a
version of NikePK’s LSD deck. I got a turn 2 OHKO kill with Wiggly and Boost
energy.
W: 2-1
6 pts.
Round 4 vs Jim Hurley
Jim goes by FiredUp13 on the PokeGym and he is from Florida. Jim was playing a
Swalot and Dodrio quick kill deck. Luckily he was weak to Psychic and I
primarily used Wobbuffett to take 3 prizes. I didn’t get a Wiggly out until late
game but by then my evolved Wobs. with Boost took care of him.
W: 3-1
9 pts.
Round 5 vs. Scott (BigPoppaBeatdown)
Scott is another Gym member. Scott was running Ninkin. All I saw was a Vulpix
and Skitty. I won on turn 4 with a Wobby by ko’ing his last basic. Like I said
this deck is made for the quick early turn kills to take advantage of slow set
ups. Late game is when my deck utterly fails.
W: 4-1
12 pts.
Round 6 vs. Sylvia
Sylvia is from Switzerland and was playing typical Gardy deck with GEX and Wobby.
Normally my deck puts up a good fight and wins versus Gardy but not this time.
It was the battle of Evolved Wobs. back and forth and she took the early
advantage. I was able to ko 1 Wobb and a Gardy before her GEX hosed me.
L: 4-2
12 pts.
Round 7 vs. Ron Roby
Ron is yet another Gym member and member of Team Florida. Prior to the match,
Ron and I both had 12 points and decided it would be best to ID and finish with
13 points. Ron was playing GEX/Gardy and we played for fun afterwards and he won
by 1 prize.
4-2-1
13 pts.
So final standings are up and I am so amped I sneak in at the 32nd spot.
Unfortunately Ron and a couple of other people at 4-2-1 don’t make the cut. So
it is around midnight and I go upstairs to get some rest.
We wake up early morning on Saturday 8/21 and I am undecided on to stay with
Wiggly or go with my MetaByss deck. We go to the Watercrest Café and sit down to
eat their Brunch. I hear my name being called and it is Martin. He invites my
son and I to have breakfast with him, Partriarch, and yes William Hung. So we
hang out and discus what decks we are playing for Worlds. William shows me his
Shiftry deck and Martin and Patriarch are going with Insanity version of Blaze.
I end up choosing MetaByss.
Pokemon World Championships Saturday 8/21/04 Round 1 vs. Denise Barlock Denise
is playing her Crobyss deck that she won the South Stadium challenge with. I win
the flip and go 1st. I have a Beldum and attach energy. She has a lone Clamperl
and cant get any other basics. I play PETM and get the Psychic Metang out and
then attach a DRE and place 5 damage counters to win the game.
W: 1-0
3pts.
Round 2 vs. Colin
Swanton from the Pokegym. This is the 1st time I met Colin and he is a very nice
person and player. He is running a version of Wailord EX with Bellosom and
Fossils. I do get 2 prizes on him and he gets 3 on me. I have a chance to win
the game if I can ko his Wailord EX to get 2 prizes. I have 50 damage on Wailord
EX and my MEX is charged to do 100 next turn. On his next turn he drops an
Oddish and then attacks my MEX for 50 damage. I can either do 100 to Wailord EX
or Metal Reversal the Oddish to do 40 and then hope he doesn’t evolve. At this
point I am all out of Strength Charms and decide that I need to win this game on
prizes rather than tie. I dish out 100 to Wailord and Wailord is now at 150
damage. He Super Deep Dives and starts the annoying Fossil stall. After the game
he told me that he made a mistake by dropping the Oddish and he couldn’t evolve
the next turn either. If I knocked out the Oddish it would have been a tie. I
didn’t so Colin wins on time.
L: 1-1
3 pts.
Round 3 vs. Tom D.
Tom is also on the Gym known as TankEngine but doesn’t post much. Tom is running
another version of Blaze insanity. I have a chance early game but cant get it
done with Gorebyss. Tom then gets complete setup and dominates me from there.
L: 1-2
3 pts.
Round 4 vs. Jim Ferrell
Gymbo from the boards. It seems like recently no matter where we go I play Gymbo.
Whether it was at Origins or at side events. It is a mirror match of sorts. I
get up early on prizes but then it is both Psychic Metagross against each other.
We both have a DRE and a Metal energy –30 resistance so the attacks are doing
minus 50 damage each turn. Gymbo basically loses this game due to flips. He
flips 12 tails in a row over a span of 3 turns with Squared Attack.
W: 2-2
6 pts.
Round 5 vs. Paul Andrade
Paul is from Los Angeles. About this time I heard the announcement that the last
flight for Unlimited would be starting. I wanted to play real bad so if I lose
this round I am out to play in Unlimited. Paul is running Flygon and gets 2
Delcatty’s out and Magneton. He energy showers all his Pokes and I have no
chance by Turn 4.
L: 2-3
6pts.
I know for a fact that 3 losses wont get me anywhere and tell PokePop that I am
dropping to join the Unlimited event. I join the Unlimited event late and miss
the 1st round. But I end up going 4-1 with my brand new VilePlume EX deck.
On Sunday I end up playing in a FR/LG pre-release and go 3-2. I pull a Moltres
EX and Gyrados EX from my packs. And with prizes I end up with a Clefable EX. My
son pulls a Blastoise EX from one of his packs too.
Then on Monday my Family and I went to MGM Studios.
Props to:
Nintendo, PUI, all staff and judges and volunteers who put on such a great
event.
Wyndham Hotel – The Pokemon Reception was just so awesome.
Team Magma and all the Japanese players that brought their best game. When we
underestimated the Power of Team Magma.
All the people and names I met.
Slops to:
The POP computer ranking system. There has gotta to be a better way to handle
tiebreakers and pairings than this.
To the lighting on stage, it wreaked havoc on my Digital Camera.
MGM security guard that wouldn’t let us in to see the Fantasmic light show at
the end of the night on Monday.
