Hullo.
Recently, articles have been posted that say that Scyther, well, sucks.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and opinions can't be proven
wrong. If you remember your High School Geometry class; proponents
aren't proven laws, but they hold, and everyone believes that they are right.
Much in the way that you can't prove that three points in space are always in
a plane, you can't prove that Scyther is a good card. However, everyone
pretty much believes that Scyther is good. Some people just don't,
though, so I have taken the liberty of writing my own article. Without
further adieu, away we go...
Scyther, I think, is good
for a variety of reasons. It has 70 HP, great for basics (so many of the
poor things have 40 or 50), a free retreat, a weakness to a fairly
under-played type, a resistance to a type with a rather large amount of
hard-hitting basics, and besides, it looks cool. All of these things may
seem minor on their own ("So what!? Chansey has 120 HP, Beedrill
can retreat for free, Electabuzz is weak to Fighting, which is arguably rarer
than Fire, Gastly has a resistance to fighting, and Charizard has some rather
neat looking cards."). However, all of these things have been put
into one basic Pokémon.
Something else, Scyther fits
into any deck. So do Colorless, yeah, but how many Pokémon are weak to
Colorless? You'd also be hard-pressed to find all of the above qualities
in a Colorless, as well (Chansey comes close, with a Dodrio parked on bench,
but guess what? Scyther doesn't need four energies to do damage, and
*gasp* doesn't need Dodrio! But, that's not really relevant, as they are
two very different Pokémon.). Fighting resistance is useful, and can be
put into any color deck, via our Bug-type friend. I play Lightning.
I have plenty of Electabuzz, some Riachu, etc., and they are all really great,
but do you know what? They are weak to something. Weak to what,
you ask? FIGHTING! Hmmm... What basic Pokémon could fit into the
deck, and help it fix this problem? I read that Kangaskhan helps all
decks. Unfortunately, it is also weak to Fighting. So, I guess it,
wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, won't help MY deck. Pity.
What about that Charmeleon? It's not resistant to fighting, and I'd have
to fit that Charmander creature in. But which one? Oh, no! I
could spend hours debating one which is better (Not really; I'd probably just
flip a coin), but wait! If Hitmonchan is staring Pikachu down, and
Charmander is the only fellow on bench, what would I do? If only there
were some Pokémon who was basic (making him a bit more dependable), and
resisted fighting... But wait! I forgot about Scyther!
Fortunately, my Lightning deck, Silly Shockers, has four Scyther.
I'm in no way saying that
Scyther helps every deck (although I can't think of one that it can't), but I
don't think it can hurt a deck. If you are cool like me, and visit
Spike's Shed weekly, then you might have noticed a fix where someone wrote in,
asking for assistance on making an Onix Stall deck. Spike helped, and
made a wonderful deck. It was a stall deck with... SCYTHER!
"But Scyther doesn't belong in Stall. It should stay in those Haymaker
things." Well, my Onix Stall, Indestructible Idiom (yes,
it was I who asked for help), used four Scyther, which stayed active,
Slashing, Slashing away, until they got, oh, 50 or 60 HP of damage, and then
retreated (for free, mind you) to the bench. What happened then?
Scoop Up, or Fuji (Of course, you wouldn't need to retreat for the Scoop Up)
away! Scyther, being a basic with no retreat cost, is great in stall, or
really, anything else.
You know what? I just
decided to proof read what I had of my article, so far, and I found it to be
rather long, so, using the common sense that told me to put Scyther in my Silly
Shockers deck, I'm going to finish it off. To summarize:
Scyther's goodness can't be proven, and Scyther isn't really "good"
at all for one reason; it's good for MANY reasons! Just think of a few
things that you like to see in a Pokémon. Little things. Chances
are, most of these things can be found in one card, and if you don't know what
that card is, I'm sorry, perhaps you just haven't been paying attention.
Scyther, because of it's Colorless attack, fits in all decks, even Stall.
If you don't believe me, don't post an article about Scyther's short comings.
Instead, make a deck with it (If you don't have any use some proxies), and see
for yourselves. Alright, I have now contracted Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
(if I spelled it wrong, I'm sorry, I guess I'm just stupid), and I'm just
tired of typing, anyway, so farewell.
Note-- If you are curious
about just how an Onix Stall would work, check the fix on Spike's Shed.
I don't play it anymore (my Scyther are currently in Silly Shockers),
but when I did, I never lost a game.
"Well, Idiom, that about ties it up."
Thanks for reading this
long, convoluted rant, and a good day to you.
