Hi, I'd just like to talk about
some of the things I've seen and heard at Tournaments, and a few personal bugs
of mine.
Like any TCG Player, I enjoy the more than
occasional Tourneys, and thrive on the competition. Out of several CCG's,
though, Pokemon would have to be my favourite, mainly because there are not as
many broken cards.
However, Pokemon is not without it's exceedingly
annoying quibbles. Some of the most irritating and common are:
1. The infamous Haymaker Deck.
It was fun for a while. But now it's getting out
of hand. With the release of Fossil, Aerodactyl and Muk only add to this
Deck's complete swamping of others. The thing that bugs me is that peoply
actually use Aerodactyl and Muk, and continue to use Haymakers. I used to use
one, but it terribly boring.
And that's another thing. People that only play in
Tournament's to win are simply unbearable. They use the same unbeatable
Haymaker week after week after week, and never let any new ideas enter the
Pokemon TCG area.
These are the same people who used to use
Mewtwo-Mulligan Deck's back when you only needed 4 Basics. This is basically
the same thing, a victory with no skill. I mean, a newbie with no experience
could totally decimate an experienced player with a Haymaker.
2. Stall to Damage Swap Decks
I have no problem with Damage Swap Decks, as long
as their aim is not to deck their opponent out, but to actually win. What bugs
me is people with Psychic decks that think that they're so good because they
won against almost everyone.
WHat they preffer not to think about is the fact
that the game they've won by decking out doesn't show who is the better
player, who has the best strategies, who keeps their cool in panick filled
situations.
All it shows is who can make a potentially
exciting game long, boring, and just plain pointless. The point of TCG's is to
have fun, not to make games long and boring.
3. Japanese Cards
Bad translations can cost you a tournament. For
instance, in a non-DCI santcioned tourney I recently went to, a man thought
that Blaine's Stadium let ALL fire Pokemon ignore their weakness to water, not
just BLAINE'S. I told him this was wrong, and he called a Judge over. The
Judge looked in this magazine, and said that he was right.
I was more than slightly annoyed. Just the
previous night, I had checked a spoiler for the Japanese GYm set, and it said
what I thought. I ended up losing the match 6-5. Later that day, I checked
several spoilers. Guess what they said.
Lousy magazines!
Also, the cards aren't even legal, yet all non-DCI
sanctioned tourneys allow them. I'm thinking that the shops that hold these
tourneys just want people to buy the more expensive Japanese cards.
FOrget that, I'm not shelling out $20 for a
booster of cards that I can't even read.
4. Promo Cards
Promo Mewtwo is broken. Forty
damage Second turn is exceedingly frustrating. At least with Scyther and
WIgglytuff you either needed to evolve or DCE. WHat I'm saying is that WOTC
needs to think more carefully before creating the Promo cards jsut so that
more people will go to the movie, which equals more $$.
WELL! That's all of the bad things out of the way.
Now for the good things.
1. The honesty of players
This is one thing that I love. In Magic: The
Gathering, every tourney I went to, I played a person who cheated. It was
either more than four of one card, putting more than one land down per turn,
etc etc etc.
With Pokemon, most of the players I play are very
nice to talk to and never cheat, just make honest mistakes.
That's one thing Magic should learn!!
2. The die-hard enthusiam of older players
One thing I hate seeing is young people collecting
the whole set, and a week later, it's classed as 'boring', and they try to
sell them all. This makes me quite depressed to see this. As David Buchanan (I
think) said, 'I'll keep my cards until I die". Amen to that.
We should all follow his example, especially you.
I'm pretty young myself, I guess, but I'll keep playing until armageddon
occurs or there's no people left on Earth. And if that happens I'll play with
my dog.
Also, I love seeing adults come to tourneys. It
just shows how addictive Pokemon is.
3. How QUICK the games are!
With Magic, I've played games that lasted longer
than three to four hours, and just get more pointless by the minute. With
Pokemon, it's rare for a game to reach forty minutes, and the games are lively
and exciting!!
If you've read this, you've no doubt classed me as
a TCG freak.
Which I am, and I'm not embarrassed about it,
either.
There's hordes of people like me out there on the
net, and I'm sure they'll support me on my crusade to free Pokemon of the
boring Stall and Haymaker Decks!!
PoJo, if you liked reading this, I'm sure lots of
other people will enjoy it, too. Put it into any section, but could you please
make it stand out a little? It took me about an hour to type, and my fingers
hurt.
