Remember AeroMew? At one time (the birth of the Fossil set) this combo
was
hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. Well, it wasn't.
Haymakers
simply tore the relatively weak duo into shreds, forcing most aeromew decks
into early retirement. However, a lot has happened since Fossil came out,
and all of a sudden, AeroMew has a new arsenal...
Variant 1: the "I can evolve and you can't" deck
This relies on Promo Eevee's pokemon power "Chain Reaction" and/or
Rocket
Magikarp's "Waterfall Evolution" attack. Basically, it allows
you to use
evolved pokemon, while your opponent is stuck with basics. Haymakers do
cause a little bit of a problem for this style of deck, but versus evolving
decks, it's great. Both Pr. Eevee and Rocket Magikarp can evolve (one way
or
another) while an Aerodactyl is in play, allowing you to use Gyarados or any
Eevee evo's. A deck of this sort would look like this:
3 Mew (league)
2 Aerodactyl (F)
3 Magikarp (R)
3 Gyarados (B)
3 Pr. Eevee
2 Flareon (J, to counteract the grass weakness)
3 Mysterious Fossil
3 Professor Oak
4 Bill
3 PC Search
2 Itemfinder
3 NGR
2 Switch
2 GOW
2 DCE (for Flareon and Aerodactyl)
7 Psychic energy
13 Water energy
Basically, you get a pumped Magikarp active and a bunch of Eevee's on your
bench with an Aero in play. Magikarp uses Waterfall evolution (yes, it
works) evolving it into a Gyarados. This sets off Eevee's "Chain
Reaction"
causing all Eevees in play to evolve. This could probably even work
without
Mew, but he's in there just for good measure (in case you're up against a
Raindancing Blastoise).
Variant 2: Dratini's AeroMew
This combo makes use of Erica's Dratini from the new Gym Heroes set. For
those of you who haven't seen it yet, here's its stats:
Name: Erika's Dratini
Type: Basic Pokemon
Color: Colorless
HP: 40 HP
Weakness: none
Resistance: P -30
Retreat: 1
Power: "Strange Barrier"
Whenever an attack by a Basic Pokemon (including your own) does
20
or more
damage to Erika's Dratini (after applying Weakness and
Resistance), reduce that damage to 10. (Any other effects of
attacks
still happen.) This power stops working while Erika's
Dratini
is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Attack: [2] Tail Strike (10+)
Flip a
coin. If heads, this attack does 10 damage plus 20 more
damage;
if tails, this attack does 10 damage.
Erica's Dratini acts as an improved Mr. Mime when your opponent uses basic
pokemon. Aeromew makes sure that the only pokemon on the playing field ARE
basic pokemon. Talk about card synergy! Pack some full heals to keep
that
barrier working and a few potions or super potions to get rid of minor
damage, and you're set. Tail Strike is a reasonable attack, and Dratini
can
stall out big, bad pokemon like Electabuzz or Magmar with ease while building
up a pokemon to wipe the slate clean. A deck of this sort might look like
this:
4 Erica's Dratini
2 Aerodactyl (F)
2 Mew (League)
3 MP Mewtwo (for early power)
3 Zapdos (B, for heavy power later on)
2 Electabuzz (more early power)
2 Scoop Up
3 Bill
2 Oak
3 PC Search
2 Itemfinder
2 NGR
2 Switch
2 GOW
2 Super Potion
3 Mysterious Fossil
2 DCE (for Aero and Dratini)
2 Full Heal Energy (specifically for Dratini, but could be used for anyone)
6 Psychic energy
13 Lightning energy
Start with Dratini if possible (Electabuzz or Mewtwo are also good starters)
and get an Aerodactyl ASAP. Once Aero is out, put Dratini in active and
slowly degenerate their pokemon. Once enough damage has been done, bring
out
Base Zapdos to wipe the playing field clean with thunders and even
thunderbolts. Survives Haymaker and simply destroys evolution decks like
Raindance or HayFever. It's only real weakness is Muk, but Mewtwo can
easily
take care of the big slimeball.
Well, there you have it, a few new deck ideas to try out on a rainy day.
Maybe AeroMew has a chance after all...
