Hi all Pojoheads reading this. Today's article is why I feel most Stage 1's
are better than Breeders.
1) To play a Breeder, you must have the Basic on the table AND the Breeder
AND the Stage 2 in your hand. Unless your deck is SUPERCHARGED (3-4 of each)
with Oaks, CPU Searches, Pokéballs, Traders, etc., this won't happen as
often as you like. Now, with a Stage 1, you have a stronger Poké than your
Basic stalling and generally taking care of business for you until you get
the Stage 2 in your hand.
2) You have more time to lay down energy. You can USUALLY only lay 1 energy
per turn. MOST Stage 2s are total energy hogs. If you play a Breeder, that's
one more turn your Stage 2 is sitting stranded with no energy. If you play a
Stage 1, you can attach more energy and you're still attacking with
something more than a Basic until your Stage 2 comes out to wreak havoc.
3) Many of the Stage 1s are good fighters in themselves. You just bypass
them if you use a Breeder. Examples:
Kadabra
Graveler
Fossil Haunter
Charmeleon
Nidorino
Dragonair
Pidgeotto (He's not THAT bad, guys...)
Kabuto (only kidding ;])
4) Mew is more common than ever now. If he D.Beams you, you are stuck at the
Basic with no Stage 1 and the Breeder is in the discard pile! This is not
good!
5) Many Stage 1s help 'set up' for the Stage 2s. For example, Haunter
(either, hopefully you use Fossil) puts the opp. to Sleep while you bring
Gengar out for the kill!
Yes, every rule has exceptions. Here some are...
1) When the Stage 1 just stinks (eg. Gloom, Machoke)
2) When the Stage 2 doesn't use much energy (eg. Victreebel)
3) When playing Raindance (Blastoise can Raindance to make up for lost
energy)
4) When desperate (playing vs. a Haymaker and you need more HP fast, when
your opponent has an evil-looking Mysterious Fossil on the Bench that could
evolve any second)
5) When the Stage 2 is only good for its Pokémon Power (eg. Alakazam,
Venusaur (he's overrated))
So there you have it. I think Stage 1s beat Breeders hands down, but that's
my opinion. The ideal combo is sufficient Stage 1s to survive alone with a
few backup Breeders. Later Pojoheads!
