Base Set-Neo Genesis (Including Promos) Part 1
Hey Pojofans! This is Erik here! Today I will be discussing one Pokemon card
from each color from each Pokemon TCG expansion. The card I discuss will be
the card that I think is the best from that color and set. First I will
discuss the Psychic types. Starting with Base Set 1. I will not be discussing
Base Set 2 though, sorry. I will break up this discussion into more than one
article. Please stick around and read this whole article. It can be useful.
WARNING: This article is VERY, VERY, LONG!
First up, Base Set Alakazam.
The Stats:
Name: Alakazam
Type: Stage 2 -- from Kadabra
Card #: card 1 of 102
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 80 HP
Weakness: P
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
Species: Psi
Level: 42
Pokemon #: 65
Pokemon Power: "Damage Swap"
As often as you like during your turn (before your attack), you may move 1
dam. counter from one of your Pokemon to another as long as you don't K-O
that Pokemon. This power can't be used if Alakazam is Asleep, Confused, or
Paralyzed.
Attack: [PPP] Confuse Ray (30)
Flip coin. If heads, the defending Pokemon is now Confused.
Card Analysis:
Alakazam is my choice for the best Psychic type in the Base Set. His Damage
Swap power is great In the early Pokemon TCG days Damage Swap decks were one
of the best decks in existence. After Fossil came out Alakazam decks started
to dwindle. Use Alakazam's power to move counters on to big Pokes such as
Chansey or Kangaskhan and use Scoop Up to heal all damage you moved. This
deck is a variant of a Stall Deck. Recently players have discovered a new
combo with 'Kazam, Fossil Tentacool! You may be thinking, "Tentacool, He is
almost the worst card!" Well guess again, Use Damage Swap to move 2 damage
counters from damaged pokes to at least three or four tentacools and use
tentacool's power to return Tenty to your deck. 'Kazam's attack isn't to
shabby at all. Three energy, 30 damage, and a chance of confusion is good.
This could slow the ever popular Mime down a lot. Next up is the popular Mr.
Mime as my choice of the best Psychic in Jungle.
Stats:
Name: Mr. Mime
Type: Basic Pokemon
Card #: card 6 of 64
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 40 HP
Weakness: P
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1
Pokemon #: 122
Species: Barrier
Level: 28
Pokemon Power: "Invisible Wall"
Whenever an attack (including your own) does 30 or more damage to Mr. Mime
(after applying Weakness and Resistance), prevent that damage. (Any other
effects of attacks still happen.) This power stops working when Mr. Mime is
Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Attack: [1P] Meditate (10+) Does 10 damage plus 10 more damage for each
damage counter on the Defending Pokemon.
Card Analysis:
Mr. Mime is great! Haymakers were almost extinct! But then players realized,
Well Hitmonchan is in all Hays and Jab does 20 damage so Mime can't
prevent
it! So Hays were back and continued to crush. Still Mime has its uses. It can
stall for a long time. Goop Gas shuts in down for a turn so big Pokes can
kill Mr. Mime. Mime is still in lots of Stall decks and RainDance is shutdown
almost completely without Lapras or Goop Gas. So Mime is dangerous! Next
up
is Fossil.
Gengar is my choice for best Psychic in Fossil,
Stats:
Name: Gengar
Type: Stage 2 -- from Haunter
Card #: card 5 of 62
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 80 HP
Weakness: none
Resistance: F -30
Retreat: 1
Pokemon #: 94
Species: Shadow
Level: 38
Pokemon Power: "Curse"
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may move 1 damage counter
from 1 of your opponent's Pokemon to another (even if it would Knock Out the
other Pokemon). This power can't be used if Gengar is Asleep, Confused, or
Paralyzed.
Attack: [PPP] Dark Mind (30)
If your opponent has any Benched Pokemon, choose 1 of them and this attack
does 10 damage to it. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched
Pokemon.)
Card Analysis:
Curse is GREAT! Use Dark Mind and do 10 damage to a benched Poke and then you
can fool with your opponents damage counters, which is really fun. You can
move all counters from their benched Pokes to their active for a quick knock
out. You can move all counters from their active to a injured bench poke
and
use my favorite trainer Gust of Wind. Or you can move all damage counters to
an injured Poke for a knock out without attacking. Gengar is a very fun
Poke
to play the Card game with. Curse is one of the funnest powers in my
opinion. Next up is Team Rocket.
I chose Dark Alakazam as the best Psychic in Rocket.
Stats:
Name: Dark Alakazam
Type: Stage 2 -- from Dark Kadabra
Card #: card 1 of 82
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 60 HP
Weakness: P
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
Pokemon #: 65
Species: Psi
Level: 30
Attack: [1PP] Teleport Blast (30)
You may switch Dark Alakazam with 1 of your Benched Pokemon (Do the damage
before switching the Pokemon)
Attack: [PPP] Mind Shock (40)
Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for this attack. (Any other effects that
would happen after applying Weakness and Resistance still happen.)
Card Analysis:
The only real thing that hurts this Pokemon is 60 HP, but have no fear,
Teleport Blast can retreat it to your bench and then you could use maybe a
Super Potion or something. Mind Shock is good because Chansey and
Kangaskhan
are still popular, mostly Chansey, and both of those pokes have resistance to
psychic, Mind Shock ignores weakness and resistance. Dark Alakazam is a
well-rounded Pokemon except for it's HP and it's a stage 2 which is hard to
get out with a breeder and dark kadabra is pretty good so I wouldn't skip
dark kadabra. Next up Gym Heroes!
Stats:
Name: Sabrina's Gengar
Type: Stage 2 -- Evolves from Sabrina's Haunter
Card #: card 14/132
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 80 HP
Weakness: none
Resistance: F -30
Retreat: 1
Pokemon #: 94
Species: Shadow
Level: 39
Attack: [P] Pain Amplifier
Put a damage counter on each of your opponent's Pokemon that already has any
damage counters on it. Attack: [PPP] Call of the Night (40)
Unless this attack Knocks Out the Defending Pokemon, flip 2 coins. If both of
them are heads, your opponent shuffles his or her Active Pokemon and all
cards attached to it into his or her deck.
Card Analysis:
There aren't many Psychics from Gym Heroes so the choice was narrow. I chose
Sabrina's Gengar because of its high HP and its attacks, low retreat, and
fighting resistance. Even though Hitmo' is dwindling because of Movie
Mewtwo
fighting resistance can come in handy. Stage 2 hurts it but Sabrina's Haunter
is really good, both of them. I prefer the gym heroes haunter but enough
of
sabrina's haunter this is about her gengar. Pain Amplifier is a nifty
attack. It work's well with a fellow Gym heroes card Brock's Golbat.
Spiral
dive does 10 damage to each of your opponent's pokes and pain amplifier will
put an extra damage counter hopefully next turn. Call of the Night is good.
Flipping two coins is kinda nasty but you might not need to shuffle your
opponent's active into his or her deck. Sabrina's Gengar is very fun and
besides from being fun it good. Gengar is one of my favorite pokes. Next
up
a recent set, Gym Challenge.
Sabrina's Alakazam is next!
Stats:
Name: Sabrina's Alakazam
Type: Stage 2 -- Evolves from Sabrina's Kadabra
Card #: card 16/132
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 80 HP
Weakness: P
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
Pokemon #: 65
Species: Psi
Level: 44
Pokemon Power: "Psylink"
Sabrina's Alakazam always has a copy of every attack your P Pokemon in play
have (including their Energy costs and anything else required in order to use
those attacks, such as dicarding Energy cards). This power can't be used if
Sabrina's Alakazam is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Attack: [3P] Mega Burn (60)
You can't use this attack during your next turn.
Card Analysis:
I had to flip a coin for the best Psychic in Challenge. Sabrina's Alakazam
was tied with Rocket's Mewtwo. This card is good because of psylink. It
can
have tons of attacks. Psylink lets Sabrina's Alakazam always (except for
when Sabrina's 'Kazam has a status change) have a copy of every attack your
psychic Pokes have in play. It's nifty with another of sabrina's kazam's
cause then you can be doin 60 damage a turn. You could use Psyburn and then
Recover and then Energy Asorption. Very COOL!!!! Sabrina's Alakazam has been
In almost every players heart since Chalenge was released. Now for the newest
expansion, Neo Genesis!
Slowking is my choice for best Psychic in Neo!
Stats:
Name: Slowking
Type: Stage 1 - from Slowpoke
Card #: Card 14/111
Rarity: Rare - Holo
Color: Psychic
HP: 80 HP
Weakness: P
Resistance: none
Retreat: 3
Pokemon #: 199
Species: Royal
Level: 39
Pokemon Power: "Mind Games"
Whenever your opponent plays a Trainer card, you may flip a coin. If heads,
that card does nothing. Put it on top of your opponent's deck. This power
can't be used if Slowking is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed. Attack: [PPP]
Mind Blast (20+)
Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 20 damage plus 10 more damage and the
Defending Pokemon is now Confused. If tails, this attack does 20 damage.
Card Analysis:
VERY COOL! Mind Games is good because your opponent might keep needing to
play a certain trainer and with a lucky flip of the coin, the trainer would
have no effect and your opponent will draw it again. Mind Games can be
very
annoying. Mind Blast is solid. 30 damage and confusion with a heads
for 3
energy is good. But if you get a tails it's twenty damage for 3 energy,
YOWZAS! That isnt good. But Mind Blast is still solid. Slowking is better
for -players who can flip heads well.
That's all for the Psychics. My next article will be about the Fire Pokemon.
