Hey Pokefans. Here are my reviews (
and stradegies) for all the cards in Base Set
The reviews are all out of Five stars, with one star
being the lowest
Bulbasaur **
Bulbasaur is a 40 HP
basic Pokemon, so the lack of a first turn attack really hurts it. Evolve fast,
if you plan to uase it at all.
Ivysaur ***
Ivysaur is an average grass Pokemon, so I'd only use him when evolving
into Venusaur. The HP is low, and the attacks, while powerful are a tad
expensive.
Venasaur **** 1/2
100 HP is great, as is the
devastating Solar Beam, which can take out most Pokemon in two turns. The high
point of this Stage 2 is the Energy Trans power, which allows you to play with
sickenly low Energy. And if you can combo Venusaur with Meganium, no force on
Earth can stop you ( Except maybe Fire, or Steel Pokemon).
Charmander
**
This is a weak basic Pokemon, which has 50 HP ( Enough to
survive for one turn), but not much else. The Rocket Charmander is much
better.
Charmeleon ****
Charmeleon has 80 HP, low retreat, ans a
colorless attack ( So you can try to "Splash" Charizard). He's good. But, while
Flamethrower looks tempting, It's recommended you save your energy for Charizard
( But, it's also recommended that you don't evolve into Charizard if Charmeleon
can defeat the foe).
Charizard **** 1/2
Charizard is exceptionally
powerful. 120 HP is excellent, Fighting Resistance is a bonus, and Fire Spin is
excessivley powerful. And, Energy Burn makes Charizard "splashable". However,
Charizard is not without his flaws. He is very expensive, in attacks, and
retreat. Don't evolve into Charizard if Charmeleon can do the job.
Squirtle
***
A good start for one of the most powerful Pokemon there is. Bubble
is a very decent first turn attack, and makes Withdraw useless.
Wartotle ***
1/2
While many people try to get a turn two Blastoise with Pokemon
Breeder, Wartotle still packs a nasty Bite, especially if you have a Double
colorless energy handy.
Blastoise *****
Rain Dance makes Blastoise
the greatest Water Pokemon ever. It also makes the triple retreat, and expensive
Hydro Pump much more easier to live with. There's really not much else to say
about Blastoise, that has not been said before.
Caterpie ***
Caterpie is a weak little basic, but String Shot helps keep it alive,
long enough to evolve.
Metapod *** 1/2
Stiffen is
pretty useles, but Stun Spore is a nice mix of defense, and offense. Better than
most people say, especially now that Neo 2 Butterfree is out.
Weedle
**
Weedle was once a good Pokemon, but now there are much
better ailment Pokemon out there.
Kakuna ****
Both 80
HP, and Poison Powder are solid, while Stiffen helps keep Kakuna alive long
enough to evolve ( which we all know is it's True Purpose).
Beedril
****
The HP may be low ( It is equal to that of Kakuna), but the
attacks are great. Twin Needle is a good attack if you're low on Grass Energy,
and Poison Sting is really worth it's cost ( If you can flip some heads). Don't
forget Beedril has Fightning resistance, and Free Retreat. Beedril also has the
advantage of having a very solid evolution family.
Pidgey *
This bird is just horrible. Low HP, and expensive attack. Avoid at all
costs.
Pidgeotto **
This is not much better than Pidgey. The
HP is a little low, while Whirlwind, usually benefits your opponent more than it
benefits you. Mirror Move is also too expensive as it can usually only be used
once.
Rattata **
Rattata was once solid, but with the coming
of Gym, and Promo Eevee there are cards just like him which have better
evolutions.
Raticate **
Raticate was once solid, but that was
befiore Lt Surge's Raticate came out. That is a much better Pokemon, And very
similar, too.
Pikachu **
The first of many Pikachu. While not a
horrible Basic, this Pikachu's problem is the fact there are many better Pikachu
to be found.
Raichu ***
Raichu was once a great Pokemon,
until better Electrics came along. Now this guy is just average, especially for
A Hologram. Both Agility, and Thunder are decent, and cost too much for what
they do. However, 80 HP, and the low retreat are nice.
Sandshrew **
Sand attack is a good first turn attack, but that's all Sandshrew is
good for, as there is no good Sandslash.
Nidoran Male ***
The
low 40 HP is this Nidoran's main problem, although he does have a good first
turn attack. I'd only use this guy in a deck if you're also using Nidoking.
Nidorino ***
Double Kick, and Horn Attack are both
decent attacks, but they are not by any means Spectacular, and do not make up
for the relatively low HP. The low retreat is a bonus, allowing you to retreat
Nidorino, in case he is in danger, while awaiting Nidoking.
Nidoking ****
Both Nidoking, and Beedril are Stage 2 Pokemon with powerful poison
attacks which cost three grass energy. I personally prefer Nidoking, although
Beedril is no sloutch. Toxic is arguably the best poison attack in the game,
dealing at least forty damage guaranteed, before your opponent can retreat ( If
your opponent does not rertreat it will do an impressive 60 damage. If they do
retreat, they may waste precious energy).
Clefairy **
The HP, and Sing are not that good, but Metronome can really slaughter
an opponent. Unfortunatley, Metronome is expensive when dealing with a weaker
foe, and a faster foe can KO Clefairy very fast. This odes not deserve to be a
hologram.
Vulpix **
The HP is okay, but lack of a
first turn attack is bad. In addition, the second turn attack, Confuse Ray is
too expensive for it's cost. It really sucks that there's no better Vulpix
xard.
Ninetales **** 1/2
Eighty damage for four energy,
is Incredible, but Ninetales is mono fire. Fire Blast is simply too expensive to
fit into any other deck. Lure is a rather crummy back up attack, but does have
it's uses, and can be annoying to most enemies. 80 HP is also nice, as is a low
retreat.
Diglett **
Diglett has free retreat, can deal
an impressive amount of damage quickly, and has a great Electric Resistance.
But, the low HP ruins it.
Dugtrio **
Earthquake is powerful, but
hurts you too much. In addition, Base Set Hitmonchan has Slash. There is really
no reason to play this Dugtrio, as there are much better Pokemon.
Growlithe
***
Growlithe has great HP for a basic Pokemon ( especially, one that
evolves). Too bad Flare however sucks.
Arcanine *****
Arcanine may be expensive, but it is one of the most powerful Pokemon in the
game. 100 HP helps it take the recoil of the excellent Take Down, while
Flamethrower makes for a great Back Up attack ( It can kill most Grass Pokemon
with a single attack). The fact that this card is uncommon, and therefore pretty
easy to find only helps it.
Poliwag **
Poliwag can put up a
fight with Water Gun, but the HP is just too low.
Poliwhirl **
Amnesia is a good stall, but that's pretty much all this tadpole's
good for, due to the risky nature, and high cost of Double Slap.
Poliwrath
***
Poliwrath was once tough, but now it's not. Better Pokemon have
Water Gun, the basics are weak, and Whirlpool is no longer as great as it once
was, because of Neo 3 Quagsire. Maybe you cpould combo him with Politoes, but
even that may not be worthwhile.
Abra **
Abra has free
retreat, a good first turn attack, and awesome evolutions. The 30 HP is a
problem, however, and makes Abra so weak it's own confusuion can KO it (
Weakness, and Resistance are applied to confusion).
Alternatively Rocket
Abra
Kadabra ****
The HP may be low, and the retreat cost may
be expenisve, but Kadabra is still good. Super Psy is an excellent attack, while
Recover is a decent way to regain lost HP. Although, Dark Golduck is a better
addition to psychic decks than Kadabra, this cat is still decent, and has not
lost it's most important ability, the ability to evolve into Alakazam.
Alakazam **** 1/2
80 HP is not very impressive for a Stage 2
Pokemon, and the triple retreat does not help matters. Confuse Ray is a decent
attack, but the real gem of this Pokemon is Damage Swap, one of the best Pokemon
powers in the game. Unless you have several Alakazam in play, I'd recommend
keeping Alakazam on the bench, moving damage from attackers like Gengar, Dark
Alakazam, Dark Golduck, Kadabra, and move Mewtwo to high HP Pokemon like
Chansey, or Pokemon with no energy to use Pokemon Center.
Machop
****
Think of this guy as a mini-Hitmonchan, with nice HP for a basic
Pok‚mon, and a very good 1 energy attack.
Machoke **
The problem with Machop, and Machamp is this card. HP is good, but
attacks suck. One attack is expensive, and damges Machoke, the other does less
damage for every damge counter on Machoke. ( which is a really bad combination)
Machamp ****
Regardless of what people say, Machamp is
a tough Pokemon, and worthy evolution. He has a solid 100 HP, a 60 damage
attack, and a Pokemon Power which deals a little damage to the enemy whenever
they attack. Even Fighting Resistant enemies should fear this guy.
Ponyta **
Ponyta has low HP, and weak attacks, which
don;t go well together.
Magnemite ***
Magnemite is a solid basic, and very fast. Thundershock is a decent
first turn attack, while a second turn self destruct is almost
broken.
Magneton **
Thunder Wave is a solid attack, but
Magneton does not have enough to back it up.
Farfetch'd **
Low HP, and Scyther have bought down the once beloved
Farfetch'd.
Doduo **
Fury Attack is not very good, but
Free Retreat, fighting Resistacne, and 50 HP help keep it alive long enough to
evolve.
Seel **
This guy has good HP, and a first turn
attack, but don't expect anything other than evolving into Dewgong for this
feller.
Dewgong ****
The HP is decent, and the attacks
are a lot better. Rivals Gyarados as best Stage 1 Water Pok‚mon ( Gyarados
is better in a mono Water Deck, while Dewgong would be better in other decks).
Don't forget this guy is Uncommon.
Gastly *
The only
good thing about this Pok‚mon is the art, and that Destiny Bind is a decent
stall. Who would not want to sacrifice Gastly to bring down an opponent's
Pok‚mon? Who would sacrifice one of their Pok‚mon to KO Gastly?
Alternatively
Fossil Gastly
Haunter ***
Not as bad as people say. Hypnosis
has 50% odds of keeping your opponent from attacking, which is okay, and some of
the time Dream Eater will be used. An okay substitute if you plan to evolve into
Gengar, and can't get enough Fossil Haunters. New cards have also made Dream
eater a solid attack.
Onix **
Excellent HP is all this
snake really has going for it.
Drowzee ***
The wombat has a
first turn attack, nice HP for a basic Pokemon, and can confuse on the second
Turn. So why does Everyone hate this Pokemon?
Voltorb *
The electric Magikarp. Use Rocket Voltorb instead.
Electrode
****
The HP is good, and Electic Shock is a pretty Effective Attack.
Buzzap, however can be lethal when used effectively.
Hitmonchan ****
1/2
In the early game this Basic is incredible. It begins by dealing 20
damage for one energy. By turn three, you should deal 40 damage a turn. The HP
is also solid. While the amount of Fighting resistant Pokemon have lowered his
popularity, keep in mind Hitmonchan can take out Electabuzz, and Wigglytuff with
one Haymaker.
Koffing ****
Koffing was once good, but
now there are much better Ailment Pokemon out there/ He's nopw simply
average.
Chansey **** 1/2
Chansey is one of the toughest Pok‚mon in
the game. She has the best HP of any Pok‚mon, Scrunch is a decent stall attack,
and she has a good, cheap retreat cost so once she has soaken enough
damage, send her to the bench. Double Edge can also be easily
devastaing,
Tangela **
The HP is low, Tangela can not evolve,
the attacks are expensive, and there are better ailment Pokemon out there. Avpid
Tangela.
Staryu ***
Even with the low HP, Staryu is
useful for the 20 for 1 energy Slap.
Starmie **
Recover, and Star
Freeze are both expensive stalls, and 60 HP doesn't help much
either.
Jynx ****
Double Slap sucks, but Meditate, and 70 HP
are decent, allowing Jynx to be playable, especially in a few very twisted
comboes.
Electabuzz *****
Electabuzz is one of the fastest, and most
versatile Pokemon there is. Thundershock is a solid one energy stall, while
Thunderpunch is an incredible second turn attack. Electabuzz can also fit into
many decks, as it only needs one electric energy. The only problems with
Leectabuzz are the Fighting Weakness, and average retreat, but they are
overlooked.
Magmar **
Magmar was once solid, but is
now almost unplayable, because of the low HP, double retreat, expensive attacks
, the lack of evolution, and the fact each Base Set Magmar you play prevents oyu
from playing a Fossil Magmar.
Magikarp *
Low HP, and crappy
attacks describe the card game, and Video Game Magikarp. Just keep remembering,
this fish evolves into Gyarados.
Gyarados **** 1/2
Gyarados
may be expensive, but in Rain Dance ( with Rocket Magikarp) he is beyond
playable. Ignoring the solid attacks, Gyarados also had excellent HP,fighting
resistance, anmd does not have an electric weakness.
Porygon *
This
guy has low HP, and attacks that do no damage. Conversion 1 can be useful, but
Conversion 2 is a good attack with crappy circumstances. Conversion 2 would be
more useful if this Pokemon could do damage People have tried to make Porygon
useful, but they have all ultimatly failed. Do not play this card, even if you
have Porygon 2.
Zapdos **
Zapdos is powerful,, but in my opinion (
and in the opinions of many reviewers) too expensive to play. There are much
better electric Pokemon out there.
Dratini **
Dratini sucks. Don;t
play Dratini, unless you really want to evolve Dratini.
Dragonair ****
Dragonair is a solid evolution, with Nice HP, good attacks ( Hyper
Beam can be twisted , when comboed with Murkrow's Mean Look, and/or a few Energy
Removals), no weakness, and resistance to psychic. Very Solid.
Mewtwo
****
Barrier is expensive, but allows Mewtwo to be invincble. In
addition, Psychic I a solid damaging attack, if your opponent has enough energy.
Mewtwo is not played much, but can catch an opponent by surprise ( If you know
your opponent id not playing Energy Removal, play a Mulligan Mewtwo deck just
for the shock Value).
Base Set Trainers
Clefairy
Doll *
Clefairy Doll was once average. Even a turn of distracting
an enemy was useful. However, once the common Mysterious Fossil ( which could be
evolved) came out, it became one of the most useless cards in Pokemon. See Jumbo
Vending Hypno if you're a fan of Clefairy Doll, and need cheering
up.
Computer Search *****
In my opinion this card is the single best
Pokemon card ( even better than an anonymous professor). For a discard cost of
two cards, you can search your deck for any card, even a Professor Oak. No card
is more broken, as unlike Professor Oak the cards aren't random.
Devolution
Spray *
This is one of the worst cards I have ever seen, and it is rare
to boot.
Imposter Professor Oak *
Imposter Professor Oak can
theoretically be good in a Stall Deck, but it usually hekps your opponent more
than it will hurt them. hat is the worst kind of Trainer.
Item Finder
**** 1/2
Most trainers play a large amount of trainers, and Item
Finder lets you get back the incredible Trainers thay you already used. Beyond
solid.
Lass ****
Lass is one of the most disruptive,
and simply evil cards there is, especially if you don;t use many
trainers.
Pokemon Breeder **** 1/2
If you want to get out a Stage 2
Pokemon fast ( Say Turn Two) , this is the card to use. It's also a good
alternative to crappy Stage 1 Pokemon.
Pokemon Trader **** 1/2
This
is a very solid, and remarkably cheap way to get needed Pokemon, although there
are many cards like it.
Scoop Up ****
Think of this card as a
mini Pokemon Center for one Pokemon only. Not very good for evolved Pokemon. If
you can get Alakazam, Chansey, and Scoop Up into play, you can get rid of 110
damage, and then place another 110 damage onto Chansey.
Super Energy Removal
**** 1/2
Losing one of your energy to get rid of two fo an opponent's
energy is a very worthwhile trade off.
Defender ****
Defender
is best used to protect Pokemon against the recoil of their attacks, or
confusion, as then it would be able to prevent nearly 40 damage to your
Pokemon.
Energy Retrieval ****
This card is great, although
not as good as Super Energy Retrieval..
Full Heal ***
There
are many cards with similar effects, and keep in mind, not all Decks have
ailments. Full Heal is only worth playing in decks with Pokemon which can suffer
ailments as the result of their own attacks.
Maintenance *
The only reason to use this card is to prevent some cards of yours
from beign Oaked. If you are afraid of that possibility, get some Proffesor
Elems,a nd leave this card alone. Even in stall decks, it's horrible.
Plus
Power ****
It's amazing what under the right circumstances 10
extra damage can do.
Pokemon Center **** 1/2
Watch your opponent's
jaw drop as all the damage that has been done is removed. Comboes incredibly
with Base Set Alakazam, or Base Set Venusaur.
Pokemon Flute ****
A
highly underrated card. Comboes excellently with Gust of Wind. It can also fill
your opponent's bench with crappy cards, so they can not send their hidden
Scyther onto the bench. This card is also great when comboed with Dark
Hypno.
Pokedex **
There are much better ways to draw
cards, or look through your deck.
Professor Oak *****
While a
Professor Oak is excellent, you don't need four in your deck. Instead, I
recommend using Computer Search, so you can find the goog professor when you
need him.
Revive ***
Revive can have several purposes,
such as bringing back Powerful basic attackers, or bringing back a needed basic
Pokemon, once you get it's evolution.
Super Potion ***
Super
Potion has been replaced by better damage replacemnt card
Bill
*****
Bill speeds up your game by one turn, each time you use
it. It may not seem much, but it is phenomenal.
Energy Removal ****
A very good stall tactic is ridding your opponent of much needed energy. Not as
good as Super Energy Removal though, but a good "Filler" card.
Gust of
Wind *****
This card has so many purposes. It can be used
to bring in an easy KO for a prize, or it can be used for stall purposes,
bringing out an underdeveloped high retreat cost Pokemon. Why is this card only
common?
Potion **
Potion was once decent, but
now better cards have come along..
Switch *****
A good
card for decks with Pokemon that have very high retreat costs ( ie- Snorlax, and
Golem). But, that's not all this COMMON card is good for. It also doubles
as a Full Heal.
Base Set Energy
Double
Colorless Energy *****
Many Pokemon could use two colorless energy,
especially colorless attackers. This is why I am more leniant on
them.
Please note I can not review Basic
Energy as they would be better than just *****.
