We lose out on a lot of things in the UK which seem unfair. So, I wrote
a little list so people know how lucky they are and can see if they agree with
me or not:
1. Events (official and non-official)
We don't have a nearby pokemon league. Well, I've heard of one 20 miles
away, but I'm not sure if it exists and I can't find out anything about it.
A lot of websites have full listings for UK and Canada, but even the official
wizards one is still 'working' on the UK league listing.
Non-official events are very poor as well. There was a 'swapping day' at
a sports centre and I thought 'great, I'll go along'. What did I find,
£3.50 entry (about $6.00) to go into a crowded room with no organisation,
just a bunch of tables and a load of screaming kids and bossy parents....
2. Price of Booster Packs
I don't know if it's the same all over the world, but I heard someone say
Booster packs were about $3.00 in the U.S. Here, you can pick up a
jungle or basic booster (same as U.S - 1 in 3 holo) for £2.50 ($4.00), a
base set 2 booster for £3.00 ($5.00) and a fossil or team rocket booster for
£4.50 - £5.00 ($7.50 - $8.30). Slightly more expensive...
3. 1st Edition Cards
Seen as english cards are in america for about 1 month before we can get them,
the chances of getting a first edition card are almost minute. The
suppliers just can't get them. I have a huge collection with 1 1st
edition card in it and I've been collecting since the start.
4. Websites
If you are looking to buy a card on the internet, then you enter in what it is
and you get a list of sites from the U.S with their prices in dollars with no
conversion. Now, unless I am going to go and pay to change my english
money into dollars, then pay a huge amount to have it shipped across half the
world, then it is pretty difficult to find a good site to buy off the
internet. Even pojo (which is one of the best sites) has very little UK
info on it.
5. Young children
If people in the U.S think a lot of children play, then you should see here. I
don't know a single person over the age of 12 who plays the card game around
here. I know one person's mother who is a friend of mine and that is it.
Apart from that it's little kids trading cards. I have my sister to
trade cards for me, but I want a decent person to play (thank you for the
apprentice league - I'm going to try it out when I've played solitaire a few
more times)
6. Mew
This is a non-card game pokemon thing, but people in the UK have had 2 chances
to get a mew on the gameboy. 1 was by winning a competition with 3 mew
on gameboy as prizes. The other was to go to a shopping centre during a
certain hour. About a thousand people went (some travelling half way
across the country); about 900 were dissapointed.
Anyway, I think that's enough for people to think about. If anyone wants
to comment on what I've said, then feel free. You'll get a reply.
