Hi Pojosamaniacs! While reading a recent article on PoJo, I decided to take
a good, long look at the upcoming Neo Discovery. Mainly, my favorite type:
Grass. Remember, though, this is from Edo's site, meaning it's the Japanese
versions. You never know what Wizards may or may not change. Afterwards, go
to Edo's site to see what your favorite type has in store. Here is an
in-depth, PoJo-style look at the Grass Pokemon of Neo
Discovery.
Rating Key:
1=Keep in the shoebox
2=Limited uses
3=Average
4=Very useful
5=A master card
Caterpie
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.16, HP 50
C: Smash Tackle: 20
Effect: This Pokemon does 10 damage to itself.
-C Retreat
R Weakness
(No) Resistance
No. 010 (Common)
Good, until the part about doing damage to yourself. Pretty nice with Berry,
though.
Rating: 2.5
Metapod
Type: Stage 1 Grass Pokemon (Evolves from Caterpie)
LV.23, HP 70
CC: Harden
Effect: During your opponent's next turn, whenever 20 or less damage is done
to this Pokemon (after applying Weakness and Resistance), prevent that
damage. (Any other effects of attacks still happen.)
GG: Metamorphosis
Effect: Flip a coin. If heads, remove all damage counters from this Pokemon.
Afterward, search your deck for an Evolution card that evolve from Metapod,
and attach it to this Pokemon. Shuffle your deck afterward.
-CC Retreat
R Weakness
(No) Resistance
No. 011 (Uncommon)
The ability to remove damage counters when evolving is really good,
especially when you see the Butterfree this guy evolves into. Harden is
still mediocre.
Rating: 3.5
Butterfree
Type: Stage 2 Grass Pokemon (Evolves from Metapod)
LV.38, HP 80
GC: Miracle Pollen: 20
Effect: Flip a coin. If heads, choose Asleep, Confused, Paralyzed or
Poisoned. The Defending Pokemon now becomes that status ailment.
GGC: Hyper Reverse
Effect: This attack does 10 damage times the number of Energy attached to
the Defending Pokemon. Remove an equal amount of damage counters from this
Pokemon.
(No) Retreat
R Weakness
F Resistance (Damage -30)
No. 012 (Rare Hologram)
Where were you when Jungle came out? OK, he should have no damage on him
when he comes out, 80 HP, a "Your choice" condition attack, and an
attack
that does more damage per Energy card and removes as much as it dealt.
What's that? No Retreat Cost? WOO-HOO!
Rating: 4.5 (It IS a Stage 2, however.)
Oddly, there is no translation for a Neo Discovery Weedle, but I'm sure one
exists. I don't really care if it sucks, because just look at Kakuna and
Beedrill.
Kakuna
Type: Stage 1 Grass Pokemon (Evolves from Weedle)
LV.22, HP 70
GG: Spread Poison
Effect: During your opponent's next turn, if damage is done to this Pokemon
by an attack (even if this Pokemon is Knocked Out), the Attacking Pokemon is
now Poisoned, and this attack does 10 damage to each of your opponent's
Benched Pokemon (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance).
-CC Retreat
R Weakness
(No) Resistance
No. 014 (Uncommon)
Bench destruction and Poisoning. Clever. I like it.
Rating: 3
Beedrill
Type: Stage 2 Grass Pokemon (Evolves from Kakuna)
LV.36, HP 80
G: Cutting Poison: 10
Effect: Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Poisoned. It now
takes 30 Poison damage instead of 10 after each player's turn (even if it
was already Poisoned).
GGC: Pin Missile: 20x
Effect: Flip 4 coins. This attack does 20 damage times the number of heads.
(No) Retreat
R Weakness
F Resistance (Damage -30)
No. 015 (Rare Hologram)
30 POISON DAMAGE??? I LOVE IT! Screw the flip a coin factor! Put this in
your condition deck as soon as you can get some!!!
Rating: 4.5 (See Butterfree)
Scyther
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.24, HP 60
GG: Power Slash: 10+
Effect: Flip 4 coins. If 1 is heads, this attack does 10 more damage; if 2
are heads, this attack does 20 more damage; if 3 are heads, this attack does
40 more damage; if 4 are heads, this attack does 80 more damage.
-C Retreat
R Weakness
F Resistance (Damage -30)
No. 123 (Uncommon)
Anyone got a two-headed quarter I can borrow? Seriously, the attack is
alright, but the 60 HP and 1 Retreat Cost remind me of Rocket's Scyther,
except no Shadow Images to fall back on this time.
Rating: 3.5
Spinarak
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.19, HP 50
GC: Poison Sting: 20
Effect: Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Poisoned.
-C Retreat
R Weakness
(No) Resistance
No. 167 (Common)
50 HP this time around, but you;ve gotta wait another turn to attack. Not
bad, maybe a little better.
Rating: 3
Hoppip
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.8, HP 30
G: Rolling Tackle: 20
(No) Retreat
R Weakness
F Resistance (Damage -30)
No. 187 (Common)
Isn't going to last long, but he won't go down without doing some heavy
damage. Wouldn't be nice if it had that Baby Power protecting it?
Rating: 2.5
Yanma
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.32, HP 60
G: Shockwave
Effect: Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 10 damage to each of your
opponent's Pokemon (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance.) Afterward, if your
opponent has any Benched Pokemon, he or she chooses 1 of them and switches
it with the Defending Pokemon.
GGG: Swift: 30
Effect: This damage ignores the Defending Pokemon's Weakness, Resistance,
Pokemon Powers and other effects.
(No) Retreat
R Weakness
F Resistance
No. 193 (Rare Hologram)
Shockwave's pretty nice and will almost always have your opponent on their
toes. Like a constant GoW that does 10 to each of your opponent's Pokemon.
Swift is always a good attack on anyone.
Rating: 4
Pineco
Type: Basic Grass Pokemon
LV.15, HP 40
G: Sudden Explosion: 40
Effect: This Pokemon does 40 damage to itself. This attack does 10 damage to
each Pokemon on each player's Bench (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance).
Flip a coin. If tails, this attack does nothing.
-CC Retreat
R Weakness
(No) Resistance
No. 204 (Common)
The only way this card would be good is if 1)It didn't evolve, 2)It had some
other attacks, or 3)It didn't have that flip a coin thing at the end. But,
alas, it does. This card sucks. It's worse than Base Magnemite.
Rating: 1
Foretress
Type: Stage 1 Steel Pokemon (Evolves from Kunegidama)
LV.40, HP 80
[Pokemon Power] (Makibishi)
Effect: Whenever your opponent Retreats his or her Active Pokemon, this
Power does 10 damage to that Pokemon. This power stops working if this
Pokemon is Asleep, Confused or Paralyzed.
SCC: High Speed Spin: 50
Effect: If your opponent has any Benched Pokemon, he or she chooses 1 of
them and switches it with the Defending Pokemon. If you have any Benched
Pokemon, choose 1 of them and switch it with this Pokemon. (Do the damage
before switching Pokemon.)
-CCC Retreat
R Weakness
G Resistance
No. 205 (Rare Hologram)
Perfect in Dark Muk decks, and essentially does 60 for 3. Have something on
the bench with free Retreat Cost to bring him back out in a hurry. Get him
out fast before Pineco dies, though.
Rating: 3.5
Scizor
Type: Stage 1 Steel Pokemon (Evolves from Scyther)
LV.42, HP 80
S: (Mineuchi)
Effect: This attack does damage equal to the half of the Defending Pokemon's
remaining
HP (round up).
CCC: Double Claw: 20+
Effect: Flip 2 coins. This attack does 20 more damage for each heads.
-CC Retreat
R Weakness
G Resistance (Damage -30)
No. 212 (Rare Hologram)
Mineuchi is really good, especially if you can find some way to combo with
Sabrina's Kadabra. And Double Claw's pretty good after Mineuchi is reduced
to 30 to 40 damage. Come for the Scyther, stay for the Scizor.
Rating: 4
Well, that's it. Neo Discovery looks promising for Grass, as well as a lot
of other types. Magnemite and Igglybuff look great, too, and there's some
cool new concepts. I can't wait. Thanks for reading my giant report. Bye!
