The comic strip in that Pojo magazine by Dr. Crash was great! The rest of
the magazine was good, apart from that tripe for little kids. You know, I
don't even like Pokemon that much, the only bit that interests me is the
card game. So when I saw the Pokemon TCG Gameboy game, I bought it
quickly...
I have to say that it is a good game. If you have a Gameboy and like the
Pokemon TCG, it's a must-buy. Why? Here are some good reasons to play it:
- If you have nobody to play, your Gameboy will always give you a game
(unless you've ran out of batteries!).
- If you don't have a lot of good cards, you can accummulate them easily and
cheaply.
- Before an important match, you can test your deck strategy on the Gameboy.
- It doesn't feature any character as annoying as Ash 'Tray'!!! And it
features Imakuni!!!
On the other hand...
- It doesn't have some of the newer cards (Team Rocket, Gym Heroes and
Challenge...)
- You can't make up an exact deck to battle against, so you won't be able to
play against a deck the same as your opponent's.
- You can only have 4 decks at any one time.
- Many of the Computer Opponents are far too easy to beat.
What you do in the game is you go around different clubs, playing games of
Pokemon cards (as you would expect. No, hold on, maybe it's TW Robot Trumps)
and gaining master medals for winning against Club Masters. Once you have
all 8 Master Medals you can face the Grand Masters. If you beat all of them,
you will inherit the Legendary Pokemon Cards.
Probably the game's worst flaw is that the decks you play against are heavy
in Evolutions, and low in Trainers. Most decks that you will be playing will
probably be vice-versa. This means that you can safely use cards like
Charizard and Machamp without fear of Haymaker, Wigglytuff and Blastoise.
In fact, Charizard works surprisingly well on the Gameboy - My fire deck's
strategy is to stall and attack with Fossil Magmar or Kangaskhan while
putting energy cards on Charizard on the bench. Once I have loads of energy
on Charizard, he will Fire Spin knocking out almost everything else. But,
without Kangaskhan and Magmar, Charizard would just be bait for weaker
Pokemon as not enough energy would be on him. I suppose I could just use
Ninetales but Charizard can knock out almost anything in one hit while
Ninetales might take two turns to do that, and if you build up Charizard on
the bench he can attack every turn until he is out of energy. The fact that
no-one uses much S.E.R. on Gameboy means that Charizard is safe from
removals.
Sorry for going on about Charizard, because he is tripe unless you build up
energy on him on the bench.
