It wasn’t going to be a legacy set focused on WATER support and it not have Atlantean Mermail support, so now we get new cards to tie both together, starting with Abyssrhine, the Atlantean Spirit.

Abyssrhine is a Level 3 WATER Aqua with 1600 ATK and DEF. Stats are fine on a Level 3 monster, plus being a WATER/Aqua is always great. It’s always treated as a Mermail card, so you get the Mermail synergy along with the Atlantean synergy. You can tribute this card from the hand along with any Atlantean or Mermail monster from your hand or field to take a Level 7 Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster in your Deck and either add it to your hand or Special Summon it. Getting to one of your big bodies is pretty good for making your Rank 7 monsters. You might be adding them to the hand if you haven’t triggered any of their in hand effects this turn, but summoning it immediately is good, especially for the new Poseidra we’ll get in Supreme Darkness. You can’t Special Summon from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn, except for WATER monsters, but it’s a fine restriction since there’s still several good WATER monsters in the Extra Deck you can access. The second effect is a Quick Effect during the opponent’s turn, letting you banish this from the graveyard and discard a card to draw a card. The draw is nice to get to a hand trap, but you’re mainly hoping to trigger the effect of your Atlatnean monsters to pop the opponent’s cards or search out more stuff for next turn, most likely preferring to pop something on the opponent’s turn. HOPT on each effect is fine. Abyssrhine is a solid support card, both effects can trigger some of your Atlantean and Mermail monster effects, plus it helps generate advantage on her own getting to your Level 7s and offering some draw power. I’ve seen 2-3 in Atlantean Mermail recently, and that feels like a fine number to be honest.

Speaking of decks people never ever want to get support, we’re doing it again with the Atlantean (and Mermail) support from Rage of the Abyss. These two archetypes work together like peanut butter and jelly, and on reveal people were already scared stiff of the idea of being hand looped to death. Surprisingly, it has proven to be a rogue sleeper pick this format, which I think is great! Starting us off is Abyssrhine, the Atlantean Spirit, a level 3 WATER Aqua monster that, conveniently, is also treated as a Mermail monster. That means you can search it with the Merlantean big three: Neptabyss, the Atlantean Prince, Mermail Abysspike, and Mermail Abyssteus, plus tomorrow’s card. Level 3 is also nice for making LeVirtue Dragon or Xyz Armor Torpedo in certain builds. Abyssrhine’s stats are oddly high for a level 3, with 1600 attack and defense, but ironically enough not relevant since you’ll barely see it hit the field anyway.

In addition to being treated as a Mermail monster, Abyssrhine has two hard once per turn effects, the first letting you tribute it from your hand alongside another Atlantean or Mermail monster from your hand or field, letting you either search or Special Summon a level 7 Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster from your deck. Many were horrified by the idea that you can cheat out Superancent Deepsea King Coelocanth, which you absolutely can do! Many topping builds run it just to flood the board with Abysspike and make Bahamut Shark and go into Toadally Awesome, which is a valid combo line. However, it’s also a great idea to use it as intended to search (not summon, SEARCH) Mermail Abyssteus, which can grab even more combo pieces while extending. Neptabyss alone will set up Abyssrhine by searching it, and if you send Atlantean Dragoons (as you should) you should have plenty of fodder for Abyssteus. Abyssrhine’s other effect is a Quick Effect you can only use during your opponent’s turn, banishing itself from the Graveyard and discarding any card to draw 1 card. At first glance, this is a pretty straightforward way to get some follow-up especially when paired with Mermail Abyssalacia, but you can also turn it into a disruption by discarding Atlantean Heavy Infantry, which does a quick pop when discarded for a WATER monster’s cost. While Abyssrhine doesn’t really start any combos on its own, it’s a very versatile 2 card combo starter and a great combo piece, so you should still run three copies. If nothing else, you can tribute a jobber and make Toadally Awesome.

+Excellent combo potential by bringing out Abyssteus or Coelocanth
+Turns Atlantean Heavy Infantry into a disruption
-Disastrous brick if you don’t open any other Atlanteans or Mermails
-Graveyard effect is only good for follow up without Heavy Infantry

Hello Pojo Fans,

In a set called “Rage of the Abyss” you’d have to expect some WATER support, and it wasn’t long before Mermail and Atlantean were back in the discussion for archetypes gaining steam. We’re starting a WATER week on CoTD with Abyssrhine, the Atlantean Spirit.

Always treated as a Mermail card at the start lends her support to the archetype and grants her all the support. A searcher for one of your Level 7 Fish, Sea Serpent or Aqua monsters from the Deck, Abyssrhine being able to tribute itself from the hand alongside another Mermail or Atlantean avoids any kind of negation potential and doesn’t use up your Normal Summon. Once searched, you can keep it in hand or Special Summon your choice, locking you into WATER monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn. Easily worked around if you needed to summon something else beforehand, Abyssrhine is helping you search something within the archetypes like Abyssbalaen, Abyssleed, Abyssmegalo (an OG Mermail heavy-hitter), Abyssteus, or Poseidra, the Atlantean Dragon.

Graveyard effects on monsters increases their playability, and are becoming the norm. Banish Abyssrhine in the grave during your opponent’s turn and discard a card to draw. While this is initially a -1 for you, you are trying to combo it with Heavy Infantry and Marksman to even things out through destroying an opponent’s card or using it with Abysshilde to Special Summon something of yours. Mermail do a lot of discarding, so this kind of cost isn’t anything out of the ordinary and there’s so many options for you to use alongside Abyssrhine to come out equal or ahead.

Mermail and Atlantean had some very good monsters and support already, the key when getting new support is to give the archetype(s) something they don’t have, and a searcher that is from the hand that also has a grave ability was something they needed. Abyssrhine searches to set up your Rank 7 summons, can set up your grave, and get you a card. Great support for the archetype.
