Otaku
Our 5th-Place pick is Adventurer’s Discovery (SW – Fusion Strike 224/264)! This Supporter lets you search your deck for up to three Pokémon V and add them to your hand. Oh, and you have to shuffle your deck after, of course! To understand the value of Adventurer’s Discovery, I’ll need to reference an older card: Winona. She is a Supporter that snags three Colorless Pokémon from your deck, adding them to your hand and having you shuffle your deck afterward. She wasn’t a staple, but she enabled crazy plays in decks running multiple [C] Pokémon-EX. The best example being M Rayquaza-EX (XY – Roaring Skies 76/108, 105/108). Not only did Winona let you snag M Rayquaza-EX itself from your deck, but Rayquaza-EX (XY – Roaring Skies 75/108) from which to Evolve, Shaymin-EX (XY – Roaring Skies 77/108, 77a/108, 106/108) to use its Ability to draw more cards, and Dragonite-EX (XY – Evolutions 72/108, 106/108) to use its Ability to return up to two Basic Pokémon from your discard pile to your hand!
So… yeah, we know about how we ought to use Adventurer’s Discovery. Snag a Crobat V and whatever other Pokémon V you need. They can be Basic Pokémon V, Pokémon VMAX, Pokémon V-Union pieces (they still count as Pokémon V when not in play), or the soon-to-release Pokémon V-Star cards. Crobat V, assuming you don’t have too many cards in play, reduces the sting from using Adventurer’s Discovery instead of a big draw card (like Professor’s Research). Now, you probably won’t be desperate to use this card outside of your first turn… but being able to snag Pokémon VMAX means you can continue to build with it even after an initial burst of setup.
I expected Adventurer’s Discovery in any Pokémon V heavy deck… but I’m not seeing that in early Standard results that include SW – Fusion Strike. It is still early enough that decks may just not have adjusted to having it available yet. It is late enough that this may be another misfire by ol’ Otaku. In Expanded, I don’t see this card being as good. I mean, we’ve got Ultra Ball and Quick Ball both being legal, plus more specialized search options. I won’t write if off entirely, though. I had Adventurer’s Discovery as my #3 pick because I expected it to at least be a staple in certain archetypes but… so far that ain’t happening.
