Akroma’s Will is, by the letter of its rules text, a fairly by-the-numbers white combat trick – but of course, we’re largely here to talk about how much more flexible it is than most of its predecessors. Not only is it an instant, but it will sometimes be doubly powerful in Commander games, and given the prevalence of various styles of sweepers and other things that discourage combat in that format, that will make it an attractive tool for decks that want to survive such effects. It can be used either defensively or offensively, too, which is another point in its favor compared to many combat tricks out there.

Akroma’s Will hilariously helps patch up the one thing the new Akroma is missing, while potentially spreading it to the rest of your army and synergizing very nicely with it. For four mana on its own, you get to give your army one of two sets of three keywords: one for maximizing damage, and one for maximizing endurance. While mana for just a pump spell is not great unless it’s extremely efficient, Akroma’s Will gives a lot of potential power for four mana, and it can even be used in a pinch to protect your army from a board wipe, most mass removal, or the like. And if you have a commander out, things escalate very rapidly, and it’s possible that you put the game out of reach if your army is big enough. It depends on having a board strong enough for the spell to matter, and this is largely a “win-more” kind of trick…though you can use this as a four-mana anti-sweeper spell, its strength comes in using it more proactively than reactively, and being able to penetrate most opponents’ defenses with a mess of keywords is a nice and expeditious way to bring a game to a quick end.

Constructed: 1.75 (not optimistic for it having impact in Legacy)
Casual: 4
Limited: 3
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander: 3.75
