STORY

Thirty years after a devastating global nuclear war, high school biker punk Tetsuo is kidnapped by government goons and subjected to terrible experiments designed to tap into his latent psychic potential.  The experiments succeed , and he becomes a monster.

He storms through NeoTokyo, a Blade Runneresque version of Tokyo, on a collision course with the first recipient of these wild talents, the being known as Akira.  And only his friend, fellow delinquent Kaneda can stop him.

Why Watch?

Akira is to Japanese anime what Snow White is to Disney Movies - the one that started it all.  Even though it was released in 1988, the quality of animation has yet to be rivaled.  What's more, it's a weighty story that almost demands multiple viewings, is a searing allegory about science run amuck and the power of the human mind.

Most memorable scene -

When Tetsuo replaces his severed arm with one made of wire and metal.
