Top 10 Anime
I'd like to make a contribution to Pojo. This is my Top 10
anime listings:
10. Vampire Princess Miyu: The OVA and the TV series are
very interesting. I thought the OVA was much more cryptic,
but I believe it's a more mature anime. I mean, people who
are starting anime would be really turned off by this type
of material.
9. Urusei Yatsura: Now this is some old school stuff.
It's basically a comedy show that revolves around the
adventures of Lum. The alternate title for this show is
"Those Obnoxious Aliens."
8. Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2032: I don't know why I love
this anime so much, but it was my first one. I love the
'80's style to it and how the animation clearly changed from
old school to '90's golden age. I also love the idea of
incorporating mecha in a way of making it a dramatic soap
opera. Besides for the plot being cryptic and unfocused,
the music does a great rendition of the '80's cyberpunk
outlook.
7. Slayers: Haha, who couldn't forget Gourry and Lina?
Their travels were amazing that lasted over three seasons of
mostly laughters. Slayers is a medieval comedy that
involves magic and spell casting. However it's also very
satirical in its humor. Even though it's very slapstick,
this anime is special to me because I own both the Dub and
the Sub.
6. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Well, this show (the
Japanese version) made much more sense than the English
version did. For example, there was a lot more plot
involved then romance. What I liked about the Japanese
version of the show, unlike its English counterpart, was it
was comical, yet serious. There would be some laughter -
something that Usagi (Serena) would do - which would make
the watcher instantly laugh at her ignorance and stupidity.
It was just a fun show to watch.
5. Fushigi Yuugi: a.k.a. The Mysterious Play. It's an
awesome series, but it gets a tad boring with all the love
moments. It's funny though, so if you like feudal ancient
Asia (China "Zhong Guo") then you'll like this TV series.
4. Shin Seki Evangelion: Muhahaha, Misato-chan. This is
one of my favorite animes that I hold dear to because it
asks questions and probes deep into the unconscious mind.
It's a real twister. The first time you watch it, you're
like "ugh...okay" but once you re-watch the earlier episodes
you say "ahh! So that's what they were talking about." I
also like the idea of "Angels" and the mecha twists
interests me. Rei will always be my favorite pilot. Go
Unit-00!
3. Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Revolutionary Girl Utena is not
that popular of an anime. It's not mainstream, but like
Evangelion it questions yourself to think. This is one of
the most underrated animes I have ever seen. At first, it
seems all magically and girly, but then it becomes surreal
and queer (no, not because Utena wants to be a "prince")
The movie and the TV series have weird moments, but if you
understand Evangelion, you should surely understand Utena.
2. Record of Loddoss War: Wow, this show is the bomb. I
love both the English dub and the Japanese version because
it's remarkable that anything for voice acting could sound
so good. The storyline, the music, the acting. It's a
masterpiece and again another underrated anime. Even though
it's only 13 episodes in length, the animation is supremely
extraordinary for 1990 when anime was changing it's style to
modern big eyes and small "non-existent" noses.
1. Hayao Miyazaki's Movies: Now, I can't name them all,
but they all compensate for my childhood fantasies. From
playing with Totorro, to riding with Kiki, to fighting with
Mononoke to saving Sheeta and Laputa and helping Nausicaa
and Chihiro find their ways home...Miyazaki's movies
are...just...flawless.
Thanks a lot,
