Pojo's Anime Top 10

Hey, my name's Oujirou and this is my top ten anime list. I've watched so much anime throughout the years, it's tough to pick just ten of them and call them the best. But it wasn't impossible, and so here's my top ten favorite picks after 9 years of fandom and a countless number of different series:

#10 - Azumanga Daioh
Aside from maybe Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard while watching something before. This has a type of comedy that I hadn't previously experienced, and it was very appealing. But more than that, this series is just so fun to watch. The characters are loveable as can be, and man is the opening music catchy. Believe me, you'll have a lot of fun watching this if you haven't already.

#9 - Iria : Zeiram the Animation
You could call this a sentimental favorite since this was the first piece of Japanese animation I watched, having stayed up until the wee hours of the morning one night a long time ago and watched it on the Sci-Fi channel. But really, this is an awesome action series, and one that is still better than many of the newer action series. This has a great story and very nice animation, and makes a fine choice for some late-night anime watching.

#8 - .Hack//Sign
This is probably the most commonly questioned series on my list. Whenever I talk with people about .Hack//Sign, they usually tell me that either they didn't understand it and/or they thought it was boring. And that's understandable, especially if you start watching in the middle of the series. But there was something about this series that I absolutely loved. Firstly, the OST is the best I've heard, no doubt. Kajiura Yuki rocks. And just the whole concept and the originality of the story is amazing. Someone who's trapped in the world of an online game and makes some friends and goes on a quest to find out why they can't log out, among other things. It's a great story. You may like it, you may not, it all depends on your personality really. But it's definitely worth a shot.

#7 - The Twelve Kingdoms (a.k.a. Juuni Kokki)
This series is an absolutely fantastic piece of work that just reeks of originality. The plot, the pacing of the story, everything is just excellent. The story was a bit tough to follow at first because they throw a ton of names and terms at you that you need to memorize to understand everything, but you pick up on it after a while. Even though they stopped Juuni Kokki 23 episodes shorter than planned, it really doesn't take away from its greatness in my opinion. Everything ends with enough closure to satisfy.

#6 - Hajime no Ippo
I was a bit hesitant about watching this series since I've never really been interested in boxing at all, but I was blown away by how good this was. Even if you're not a fan of boxing, you should really watch this series. The way the plot progresses in this is great. Ippo starts out as a wimp that gets bullied and then keeps reaching new levels of skill as his training for boxing progresses. Each match that Ippo fought was really entertaining, and the last one at the end of the series left a great impression. In a show like this you might think that the results of the matches would be predictable, but I really wasn't able to predict who would win most of them. This series also has a great mix of drama and comedy. From the dramatic matches that you watch to the absolutely hilarious antics of the rest of the boxers at the gym, it's got something for everyone. It might be mostly about the high intensity matches, but it's still one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. You just can't find this kind of comedy elsewhere.

#5 - Urusei Yatsura
Classic romance comedy. I'd have to say that this is probably the most consistantly funny show I've seen. Even after a hundred episodes I'm still laughing. Rumiko Takahashi's works usually don't disappoint, and this is no exception.

#4 - Maison Ikkoku
Best romance anime ever, period. Maison Ikkoku has a fine mix of romance, comedy and drama. It's also a very realistic, down-to-earth series, which I think allows people to really connect with what's going on. One element that this series has that many don't is excellent plot progression. You go through a span of about seven years in the story by the end, which is unheard of in most any other show. It's nearly 20 years old, but it's by far one of the best shows ever, and arguably the best of Rumiko Takahashi's works.

#3 - Hikaru no Go
I was really turned off by the go theme at first and probably wouldn't have watched this if a credible source hadn't recommended it to me, and I was blown away. It was sort of like Hajime no Ippo in that respect. I got hooked on this and enjoyed every bit of it. Not totally predictable matches either, some of the results really surprised me. It was pretty amusing watching Touya go from being a nice boy to being a psycho that's obsessed with playing go against Hikaru too.

#2 - Angelic Layer
If there was ever a show that a grown man should be turned off by and ended up loving, this is it for me. This series has an excellent concept and a great story. Not only that, but the battles in this are a lot of fun to watch, especially as you get near the end. And here's an interesting fact that some people don't know. I was shocked when I was reading the Chobits manga recently and I found that Angelic Layer is actually a prequel to Chobits. The landlady from Chobits and her husband that created persocoms are main characters in this series. Intriguing, isn't it? But overall this show has everything: humor, battles, relationships, you name it. Great stuff.

#1 - Ranma 1/2
Yes, like most #1's, this is one of the first shows I watched. Now admittedly, even among Rumiko Takahashi's works, this probably isn't as good as Maison Ikkoku or even Urusei Yatsura. However, this is ranked first because it took me to an extreme level of fandom that has remained unsurpassed for many a year. From creating a website about it to writing a long fanfic about it, this took my fandom to the extreme. This plus the other two aforementioned shows more than make up for the blunder that was Inuyasha. :)

So there you have it, my ten favorites. But, alas, if there is a list for the best, there must be one for the worst as well.

Oujirou's "Avoid these like the plague" list:

Dragonball GT - They took everything that was bad about DB and DBZ and made this. Horrible.

Da Capo - People call it Da Crapo for a reason. I can't believe they made a second season.

Sakura Diaries - Soooo annoying.

Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi - An entire series of boring filler eps.

Someday's Dreamers - Most boring series ever. You'll seriously fall asleep.

Trigun - C'mon now. Walking into a storm of bullets, not dodging, and not getting hit once? Plus, there's a ton of enemies that all die in like one episode near the end, and all just to make Vash unhappy? I'll never understand the fandom behind this.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Again, I'll never understand the fandom behind this. Undoubtedly a candidate for worst ending of all time, and not that great throughout the rest of the series either.

So, that's that. If you want to message me and talk anime and/or vent at me for ripping on Trigun/NGE/Inuyasha, you can catch me on MSN Messenger at oujirousama@hotmail.com.
