Anurid Brushhopper is a card that doesn’t look like it does very much, especially compared to modern cards. Actually, it doesn’t look like it does very much compared to the M10 era, which looks simple compared to the last five years. But appearances can be deceiving. For one thing, as long as you can meet its steep cost, it basically can’t die, short of spells with split second. People used to do things like cast Wrath of God while it was exiled, and find themselves left with the only creature in play. For another thing, the Odyssey block wanted you to discard cards as often as possible and have cards in your graveyard, and white was (like now) the color where it was hardest to do that. To be quite honest, it was slightly niche even in its own era and is even more so now, but like many odd-looking cards, it can be quite effective when used correctly. It’s worth noting that it shares a color with about half of Bloomburrow‘s frogs, which may turn out to be useful to someone in casual land.

Coming from an era where creatures weren’t all that impressive on the whole, Anurid Brushhopper stands out for both a solid body and being stupidly hard to kill. So long as there are two cards in hand, that Brushhopper may not die as a consequence of combat, and a creature that keeps coming back is certainly a menace, enough so to be immortalized in World Championship decks for both of the years it was eligible to. While it’s not as formidable in today’s game, it would still be an annoying creature that’s hard to out with upside as a discard outlet (which sometimes matters), and I imagine a Modern-legal one would hop its way into relevance, even in a niche role.

Constructed: 3 (might be fringe playable in Legacy, but you’re compromising a lot to force it)

Limited: 4.5
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.5
