Apophis the Serpent – #MZTM-EN010
Special Summon this card as a Normal Monster (Reptile/EARTH/Level 4/ATK 1600/DEF 1800) (this card is also still a Trap), then you can Set 1 “Apophis” Trap from your Deck, except “Apophis the Serpent”. It can be activated this turn. If this card is sent to the GY: You can add 1 “Embodiment of Apophis” from your Deck to your hand. You can only use each effect of “Apophis the Serpent” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,
Apophis the Serpent is the new retrain of the Embodiment Trap Card Odion played against Joey in the anime, and because of the new support, it is far better.
Same stats as the original, but Apophis the Serpent can set another Apophis Tra from the Deck. Serpent will get Apophis the Swamp Deity most of the time because it can negate cards up to the number of Continuous Trap Cards you have face-up for this turn, in addition to its 2000/2200 stat line. Allowing the card you search to be used the turn it is set ensures a double dose of Reptile Trap Monsters that will in turn be used to summon the new Fusion Monster: Divine Serpent Apophis. When that happens, Apophis the Serpent will add the original Embodiment of Apophis from the Deck to the hand. So while it is not the best anymore, playing the OG is still needed to give you the best odds to summon Anubis or the Divine Serpent Apophis.
The 1-2 combo of Apophis the Serpent and Apophis the Swamp Deity can’t be understated. You will get a deck thin, Special Summon (baring it is the Main Phase as Deity is restricted to being summoned then) and a double negation of face-up cards on the field for the turn. Send them both to the grave for your big bad Fusion Monster, get a search off Apophis the Serpent, then reset your two at least with the Divine Serpent Apophis. If you’ve got more in the grave Anubis becomes live but will cycle at least two back to the Deck.
Continuous Trap Cards are slow and targets on the field. Giving them protection through The Man with the Mark alongside Treasures of the Kings (or Temple of the Kings) as well as something useful to go into using those trap monsters was needed for the strategy to work. They couldn’t just be trap monsters, they had to search, they had to advance the board to shift the game in your favor. Apophis the Serpent gets your other newest Apophis monster while also getting you the original when it leaves the field. It pays you back and is critical to getting quickly to Divine Serpent of Apophis.

We were bound to also get an Apophis retrain in this new support so you don’t have to rely completely on Embodiment of Apophis, so now we have Apophis the Serpent.
Apophis the Serpent is a Continuous Trap that on activation Special Summons itself as a Normal Monster (Reptile/EARTH/Level 4/ATK 1600/DEF 1800) with it still treated as a Trap, then you can set an Apophis Trap directly from your Deck besides Apophis the Serpent and it can be activated that turn. Solid to get your other Apophis Traps from the Deck to immediately use, since you can use this and the other Apophis you set and then activate to summon Divine Serpent Apophis, who will then set the two Apophis Traps you sent to the grave to summon it, which will most likely be this and Apophis the Swamp Deity, and then you have a negate and a pop for the opponent’s turn. Also, if this card is sent to the graveyard, you can add an Embodiment of Apophis from your Deck to your hand, which is nice to give the original some sort of use with the new stuff, but it wouldn’t make you want to play more than a single copy usually since that card does basically nothing but have the same stats that this will have. Each effect is a HOPT, since it can get you to a ton of Apophis Traps otherwise. It’s another good piece of support for an Odion Deck, making Apophis the Swamp Deity more consistent to get to, and mix this with Temple of the Kings and activating this should summon Divine Serpent Apophis right away. The Apophis Traps probably have the most mixed ratios in the Odion Deck, with 1-3 of this, 1-3 of Swamp Deity, and 0-1 of Embodiment, but you for sure use this.

Art: 4.25/5 Embodiment of Apophis in an alternate pose, but it’s solid.

The Apophis family grows with another Apophis retrain, this time focusing on combos over disruption; Apophis the Serpent is once again a Continuous Trap that will, of course, become a Trap monster. Notably, it doesn’t mention Temple of the Kings, though it’s hardly necessary since Treasures of the Kings will directly search it, and if that fails even Silhouhatte Rabbit can (though you usually search Apophis the Swamp Deity instead). Serpent comes with 2 hard once per turn effects; on activation, Serpent will Special Summon itself as a, what else, level 4 EARTH Reptile with 1600 attack and 1800 defense, considering itself a Normal monster and a Trap, which does have funky interactions you’ll have to keep in mind– yes, you can still destroy it with Mystical Space Typhoon. Additionally, Serpent will let you Set an Apophis Trap directly from your deck and let you activate it that turn. That is an incredible effect because it will instantly set up summoning Divine Serpent Apophis using Serpent and Swamp Deity, who’ll be able to recycle both Serpent and Swamp Deity and effectively set up a multi negate and a destruction. That also brings us to Serpent’s other effect, triggering if it’s sent to the Graveyard to simply search Embodiment of Apophis, Unfortunately, that is indeed the original Embodiment of Apophis with no effect, but at least it’s free advantage and an additional Continuous Trap to fuel Swamp Deity. As far as combos go, the idea is to Set it with Treasures of the Kings, get Merciless Scorpion of Serket and get the original Temple of the Kings, then summon Serpent thanks to Temple of the Kings. It has the same problem as Argostars – Lightning Tydeu in that it’s a fantastic combo piece held back by the fact it’s a Trap and thus you’ll need to jump through hoops to use it properly. I also don’t like the poor stats, but at least you’ll hopefully have Divine Serpent Apophis around as your main muscle. Most of the lists I’ve seen play 2 copies, which I thought was a little silly since I figured you’d want more Traps for Treasures, but it makes sense knowing you could play power Traps instead. So 2 is the magic number!
+Excellent combo potential by grabbing Apophis the Swamp Deity or Embodiment of Apophis
+Easily enables the summon of Divine Serpent Apophis
-Has to be weaved into combos to reliably be a combo piece
-Mediocre stats like the other Apophis Trap monsters

Art: 3/5 Well, at least they went with a different pose this time? I’m starting to notice a theme with these Odion cards…
