Archfiend’s Advent – #BLTR-EN046

While you control “Shining Sarcophagus”, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. Other monsters you control gain 500 ATK, during your turn only. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can target 1 monster your opponent controls; take control of it until the End Phase, but that monster cannot attack unless you controlled “Shining Sarcophagus” when this effect was activated. You can only use this effect of “Archfiend’s Advent” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Archfiend’s Advent is another Summoned Skull retrain, not that we mind that, SS is a classic.

Shining Sarcophagus archetype gets another monster. Normal Summoning this without tribute is preferred, and needing Shining Sarcophagus isn’t a bad restriction as most of that archetype’s monsters need that card to Special Summon or summon themselves like this anyways. Normal Summoning a Level 6 2500ATK like it was a standard Level 4 or lower is good, period. The ATK boost this turn is okay, helping to put forth some extra damage if you use any for attacking.

The Change of Heart ability off Advent’s Normal or Special Summon is what makes this card good. You are likely contributing nothing to this card’s summon, then, you get an opponent’s monster for free? Instant Link 2 and all you need is Shining Sarcophagus. If they somehow don’t control Shining Sarcophagus when summoning Archfiend’s Advent, then no CoH for you. Going second, this is the monster I want to lead with if I have Shining Sarcophagus in my hand. Gandora and Dark Magician can Special Summon themselves, this monster I want to summon and steal an opponent’s monster. At the very least you are forcing a response with that effect and outing that effect for the turn and it cost you one card. Ties That Bind was already your swarm Spell Card that, while locking you out of the Extra Deck for the turn, got you two monsters. Alongside this cad and Ties That Bind, you are looking at four monsters that are going to be attacking and get a 500ATK boost each for the turn.

This may be the best version of Summoned Skull or card treated with that name there is. Within its archetype it is easily summoned, holds high ATK, steals a monster, and gives a slight boost of ATK for the turn to all your monsters. You’re strategy in the Shining Sarcophagus archetype will always be keeping that card on the field, needing it is expected. No negation, no spot removal, that’s fine, I cannot get over the absurdity of Normal Summoning a Level 6 2500ATK monster that will then Change of Heart an opponent’s monster.

Next up, we’re reminded Yugi used Summoned Skull as it now joins the Shining Sarcophagus Deck and becomes Archfiend’s Advent.

Archfiend’s Advent is a Level 6 DARK Fiend with 2500 ATK and 1200 DEF. A good ATK stat for a Level 6, DARK is great, and Fiend is pretty good. While you control Shining Sarcophagus, you can Normal Summon this without tribute, so it makes this card somewhat easier to summon since you should be turboing to Shining Sarcophagus in the Deck. Other monsters you control gain 500 ATK during your turn only, helping you OTK with other ways besides Gandora probably. Upon being Normal or Special Summoned, you can target a monster the opponent controls and take control of it until the End Phase, but it cannot attack unless you controlled Shining Sarcophagus when you activated tihs effect. It’s more OTKing more than likely by taking the opponent’s monster to deal damage with it, then Link it away if you somehow didn’t OTK. If you summon it on the opponent’s turn, you get to at least disrupt them by taking their monster for a turn. Hard once per turn on taking an opponent’s monster, which is fine. It’s an alright addition to Shining Sarcophagus, and I guess you could run it in Archfiends potentially. It’s not amazing, more of another card to run by preference in its relevant Deck, but it isn’t bad.

Art: 4/5 It’s not the original, but it’s still pretty cool.

Summoned Skull joins the Shining Sarcophagus roster as Archfiend’s Advent. Like the original, it’s a level 6 DARK Fiend monster, and can be searched as usual by Shining Sarcophagus, Future Silence, and Gandora-G the Dragon of Destruction (as well as generic Archfiend searchers, if you’re crazy enough to do that…). Advent also joins its Summoned Skull brethren in maintaining the solid 2500 attack and measly 1200 defense, a stat spread that was terrific for its level in ancient times, though a dime a dozen by modern standards.

Disappointingly, rather than Special Summoning itself, Advent instead can be Normal Summoned without tributes if you control Shining Sarcophagus. This isn’t a huge deal since Ties that Bind can bring out your Silent monsters anyway, but it’s an odd design decision considering Gandora G pretty much summons itself for free. During your own turn, all of your monsters gain 500 attack, a carryover from Archfiend’s Call. It’s not amazing, but it’s a decent boost considering many of your in-archetype monsters have pretty bad offensive presence. Advent’s sole hard once per turn effect triggers if it’s Normal or Special Summoned, letting you target and take control of an opponent’s monster until the End Phase, though if you don’t control Shining Sarcophagus when it triggers, it can’t attack. Normally, this won’t be an issue since you’ll probably have Shining Sarcophagus up anyway if Advent hits the field. Advent doesn’t do much going first, and not Special Summoning itself is very lame, though it’s not a bad tech to run at 1 since it can steal games going second, especially as untargetable monsters become more rare in the meta.

+Decent for breaking boards and enabling OTKs
+Good stats for its level factoring in the attack boost
-Takes up your Normal Summon
-Limited applications when going first

Advanced: 3/5
Art: 4/5 I know all the other Summoned Skull forms already incorporate the lightning imagery, but it’s nice to see it on the original for once.
