You might expect that Argoth, which in lore was Dominaria’s “alpha forest” before the Brothers’ War, might get a slightly more aggressive card. I choose to understand this as representing Argoth as it was before the war when things seemed more placid, especially since it has a meld ability. (More on that soon!)

Its token-creating ability is, as I alluded to, rather slow, but in a slow deck that can sometimes work. You might as well take advantage of the graveyard synergies, as well – Nephalia Drownyard has been a strong setup card for a long time, and this card is not just the same color as Lhurgoyf and friends, but also uncounterable. I don’t know if that’s enough for high-tier play in every format, but I suspect that if nowhere else, there are going to be decks in Standard that try to race to get the meld card into play and more or less automatically win.

A conditionally untapped green source with other abilities is pretty interesting, and Argoth has the ability to slowly churn out bears to defend itself if you need the bodies. Of course, that mill isn’t just for “balance”…it has other functions, particularly in setting up the other attraction of this card.

But as-is, Argoth is an okay land on its own. The ability to crank out blockers and mill yourself isn’t bad, even if the rate on it is a bit on the high side. The main attraction is the meld part, which will merit discussion later, but just in a vacuum, it’s a serviceable enough card that will rarely be dead weight.

Constructed: 3.5 (not being legendary helps, though you’re likely only going to want to run this with another specific card)
Casual: 4.25
Limited: 3.5 (can grind out games to help you win them, even if that might be a bit fraught in a format with a small deck size)
Multiplayer: 3.25
Commander [EDH]: 3.5 (has some cards it pairs extremely well with in the command slot…with one standing out)
