Since the 20th Anniversary celebration is over, we’ll do weekend reviews every once in a while for loose end cards from side sets and today we got the first of four Hidden Arsenal Chapter 1 promos to look at: Armed Dragon, the Armored Dragon.
Armed Dragon, the Armored Dragon is a Level 4 WIND Dragon with 1900 ATK and 1400 DEF. Pretty fine stats for Level 4, Dragon is always great, but WIND sadly doesn’t offer the most benefits compared to other Attributes. Anyways, lone effect this has triggers upon destroying an opponent’s monster in battle, letting you summon a Level 5 or lower WIND Dragon from hand or Deck, just as long as it isn’t another copy of this, but that monster cannot attack directly that turn. Honestly, effects that trigger upon destroying monsters in battle are pretty outdated since it can be a challenge to get some monsters to the Battle Phase, especially something like this. Doesn’t help that it’s only on 1900 ATK. It can get over some of the smaller monsters the opponent leaves on board, which is fine, but boss monsters are easier to summon than ever, so there will be where it’s a challenge to trigger this effect. Also the monster not being able to attack directly doesn’t feel necessary considering this effect is somewhat slow for the standards for the modern game. Having a nice pool of WIND Dragons to summon is nice at least, with Dragunities and Armed Dragons, the latter where this is most likely to end up in. It’s flawed for the modern game’s standards, but pulling it off to get one of the Armed Dragon LV5s from Deck is nice, whether it’s the original to try to use that to run something over for Armed Dragon LV7, or getting the Thunder retrain to summon Armed Dragon Thunder LV7 easily.
Advanced Rating: 2.5/5
Art: 4/5 It was from the manga, where the Armed Dragons didn’t really appear in, but this did look like them, so easy to pass it off as an Armed Dragon. Plus no manga effect let them come up with anything for an effect in the real card game.

Armed Dragon, the Armored Dragon, lazily named, but 1900 attack on a Level 4 is always good, Wind is fine for the Theme, Dragon has insane support, and the defense is fine too at 1400. The Effect is simple. Destroying a Monster lets you Special Summon a Level 5 or lower Wind/Dragon from your Hand or Deck, other than this card. The Effect of gaining a Monster here also fits in the Armed Dragon line, and the Effect can bring you a Level 5 (or 3 I suppose) and including higher Levels wouldn’t matter as you couldn’t bring out Level 7 or 10 with this Effect anyway. This is definitely a more effective and efficient card than Level 3, as it has to send itself to the Graveyard to bring out Level 5. Here, you have more options, and you get a 1900 beatstick that just has to destroy something. That Monster can’t attack directly, which I think is a bit odd, given it’s only Level 5 and below. BUT, being the only stipulation, and still being able to attack (Tribute, Extra Deck, etc) I can’t hold it much against this card.
