I’m not going to try to type out Asmor’s name every time, but I would like to think that she’s on familiar enough terms with longtime players that it won’t matter! Aside from a few pieces of flavor text over the years, we’ve only ever seen her in a story from the 1996 anthology Distant Planes, and thus are only now getting a better idea of her abilities. And it was probably worth the wait, as her abilities drip flavor and are tantalizing to build around. There are plenty of ways to get to be allowed to cast her even in a deck other than Madness, and searching out The Underworld Cookbook sets up a fun engine. In faster settings, players might be interested in her removal ability: it costs no mana and takes down anything up to and including Titans. We probably should’ve expected no less from someone who made it as a chef in the Underworld!

Talk about an ascended meme if ever there was one. Coming all the way from a bit of seemingly throwaway flavor text on Alpha‘s Granite Gargoyle, the enterprising underworld chef known as Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar has made cameos on a couple other cards before finally getting her own card in Modern Horizons 2. With a name too long to accommodate a mana cost, she instead comes with a unique ability: so long as you’ve discarded a card on a given turn, she can come out with her own passive ability. Conveniently, her magnum opus, The Underworld Cookbook, is the perfect fuel to get her out, and she even can tutor out more copies of her undersold masterpiece. On board, she’s not bad, a 3/3 body who can remove creatures by making them beat themselves up (if you have the food to spare…which, conveniently, she can help make in a roundabout way).

Despite being a meme turned reality, she’s quite good! Removal and tutoring on a body are nice, though her main downside is that she isn’t the easiest creature to get on board if you’re not careful in your deck building. Decks like Jund can potentially get her going faster, and there are plenty of shortcuts to getting her able to be cast (Street Wraith might be one of the best), but she does ask for a fair bit in deck building to make her work out well. She’s already put up decent results in Modern events, which shows what a bit of legwork in making her work can do.

Constructed: 3.75
Casual: 4
Limited: 3.25 (can work, but does require a bit of legwork to get going)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander: 3.75
