Innistrad without Avacyn still feels odd to me, although her presence is still felt through cards like this one. It does a reasonable impression of her Angel of Hope incarnation’s abilities, albeit with a significant limitation – one which doesn’t really match the original card, to boot. To be fair, legendary creatures are more common than they’ve ever been, but getting the maximum use out of the Memorial means your deck has to be constructed in a very specific way and exclude a lot of cards that might be useful. That cost is also kind of an issue: while there are ways to cheat it into play, it often doesn’t advance the game state if you do. The card isn’t useless by any means, but unless your deck needs this specific effect for some other reason, it’s often hard to fit in.

As part of the Commander subset, there’s no Limited score for this card.

Much like how Akroma’s Memorial references the skillset of a famous angel, Avacyn’s Memorial does the same for another angel. Unfortunately, something got lot in translation, because Avacyn’s Memorial is resolutely underwhelming; while the original Avacyn was a hard-to-out beater that made the rest of your board nearly indomitable, Avacyn’s Memorial offers far more limited protection and does little to advance the game state. It does have some in-built synergy with a format where every deck has a legendary permanent at its helm, but this is still eight mana to only protect some of your board and not advance your game state further. Make no mistake, this isn’t absolutely unplayable if you’re desperate or have artifact synergies running around, but this feels more like a bargain version of a $50+ card.

Constructed: 1 (if you’re spending eight mana or a cheat-in slot to trick a card in, it really should not be this one)
Casual: 3.5
Limited: N/A
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.25 (t’s worse than Avacyn, but it is an artifact, and you’re still able to have this as a bt of back-up in a pnch if your Avacyn gets got)
