Is Blank Slate Challenge the blank canvas your game night needs?

Let’s get one thing straight: Blank Slate Challenge isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s a simple party game built around the classic “fill in the blank” concept.  Basically, The OP Games took the original Blank Slate game (that we reviewed in in 2018 – and loved), and turned into a 2 vs 2 co-op/challenge game.

What’s in the box?

What’s in the Box?

  • 75 Word Cue Cards (two sided for 150 cues)
  • Dry-erase slates
  • Scoring slates
  • Markers

Pretty standard fare for a party game. The slates are sturdy and the markers write smoothly. No complaints there.

The box is travel sized, coming in at 6″ x 9″ x 1″.

How Does It Play?

The objective this time around is to outscore the other team as your and your partner attempt to finish Word Cues with the same answers.  You have 10 rounds to score as many points as possible.

A Word Cue card is randomly flipped over.  All players write down two answers on their blank slates.  Players are trying to read their teammates minds, and trying predict each other’s answers.

A total of 10 points are available to each team. Tally up the scores for each
team accordingly.

In this example, Team A scores 4 points, and Team B scores 6 points in the round.

Each player on a team scores:
• 3 points if their top word matches either word of their teammate.
• 1 point if their bottom word matches either word of their teammate.
• 0 points for unmatched words.
• 2 additional bonus points if both words match and are in the same order.

The Good

  • Quick and Easy: Set-up is a breeze, and games fly by. Perfect for those nights when you want some laughs without a huge time commitment.
  • Surprisingly Strategic: While there’s a lot of luck, there’s also a bit of strategy involved in guessing what other players might write.

The Bad

  • Only 4 players? The original Blank Slate game plays with 8 players.  This version only plays with 4.
  • Repetitive: The core gameplay loop can get old after a few games.

Final Verdict

Blank Slate Challenge is a solid party game that’s easy to pick up and play. If you’re looking for something quick, fun, and low-pressure, this could be a good fit.  The price is reasonable, and it travels well.  Click here to check the current price on Amazon.com

I just don’t understand why they made this version for only 2 couples.  Just adding a few more boards and 4 more markers would allow you to play with 8.  I guess you can get around this by buying another copy, or grabbing your original board and markers from the original Blank Slate Party game.
